Golden Donkey Christmas Xpand Slot Review
A donkey in a Santa hat leans over the top of a jackpot ladder, its tail curling up beside the logo, while snow drifts down across a wooden mine shack strung with warm yellow bulbs. Golden Donkey Christmas Xpand hides nearly all of its real game behind a single round: the 5×3 reels you actually spin are the least interesting thing about it, and the 7×5 grid inside the feature is where every decision this game makes pays off. AceRun has essentially taken the Xpand formula of Golden Donkey Xpand and hung tinsel on it, and the maths says as much.
The numbers are unchanged in character: 94.0% RTP, Super High volatility, a 5×3 grid with 10 fixed paylines paying left to right, and stakes from 0.20 to 50 per spin. The maximum win is 4,020x the stake, and the jackpots and the growing Donkey combinations are how you chase that ceiling. If you liked the family’s other digs, Donkey Coins Hold & Win and Joker Box Hotfire Hold & Win work the same seam.
Base Game & Features
The base game is a straightforward five-reel, three-row setup. Wins land on 10 fixed paylines, all reading left to right, and only the highest combination on each line counts. It’s a small grid by modern standards, which suits a game built around one big feature rather than a busy reel set.
For a Super High volatility title, the base game isn’t shy about small hits. The hit rate sits at just over 19%, which works out to a win of some size on roughly a fifth of all spins. Most of those are token pays; the maths needs the frequent trickle to keep the reels moving between features.
Wilds substitute for other symbols and double the win when they do, which quietly makes them the most valuable symbol on the board. A wild in a line win is worth twice what the same line pays without one. The reels also carry the coin symbols that feed the feature, alongside the decorated tree, presents and mining trappings of the Christmas reskin.
Paylines & Symbol Rules
- 5×3 grid, five reels and three rows
- 10 fixed paylines, always active on every spin
- All lines pay left to right, starting from the leftmost reel
- Only the highest combination on each line counts towards a win
- Wilds substitute for paying symbols and double any win they complete
Extra Bet
There’s an optional Extra Bet that doubles your total stake. In exchange, the chance of triggering the feature win increases by 300%. At the 0.20 floor that means paying 0.40 per spin; at the 50 cap you’re laying out 100 every time the reels move.
That’s a steep premium for a faster route into the only round that really pays here, and it’s the kind of lever Super High volatility games tend to bolt on. Whether the doubled cost is worth carrying on every spin depends entirely on how badly you want out of the base game.
Golden Donkey Christmas Xpand Xpand Feature & Free Spins
The Xpand Feature is the whole point of the game. Coins landing on the reels set it off, and the number of coins in the trigger decides how many spins you start with. Once it’s underway, the grid stretches to a 7×5 matrix.
That expanded matrix opens with two paying Donkey combinations already on it, each a 1×3 block. On each spin, empty boxes can sprout a new Donkey, and anything that appears expands the existing or new Donkey combinations into bigger ones. The round is a builder: the donkeys grow, and the pays grow with them.
Inside the Round
- +3 spins symbols add that many spins and grow the Donkey combinations
- +1 spin symbols do the same for a single spin
- Mini and Minor jackpot symbols can appear in any empty box
- Collect three Grand triggers during the round to win the Grand jackpot
- Collect three Major triggers to win the Major jackpot
The spin symbols matter more than they look. Extra spins mean extra chances for a Donkey to land in an empty box, and every Donkey that lands stretches a combination further across the seven-column grid. A round that opens quietly can end with donkeys spanning half the matrix.
Nothing else eats a spin. Every turn of the 7×5 grid either grows a combination, drops a jackpot symbol, or lands one of the collect triggers, so even a spin without a Donkey can push the round along. The only dead result is an empty box that stays empty.
The Jackpot Ladder
Four rungs sit above the reels in the base game, capped with snowdrifts and icicles for the season: Mini, Minor, Major and Grand. In the feature, the Mini and Minor can drop directly into empty boxes, while the Major and Grand have to be earned by collecting three matching triggers across the round.
It’s a round with two prize tracks running at once. The Donkey combinations expand and pay as they grow, while the jackpot symbols stack a second layer on top. Three Grand symbols is a long ask across a handful of spins, but one well-timed expansion can reshape the whole board.
The two tracks don’t compete for space in any obvious order, which is where the round’s surprises come from. A spin that adds a Mini jackpot to an empty box is also a spin that didn’t grow a donkey, and the reverse is just as common. The board fills up either way.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 6.4/10
Most of a session here is spent in the snow, spinning a small grid that pays in crumbs while you wait for the coins to line up. The reason anybody sits through that is the one round where the shack opens up into a 7×5 board and the donkeys start stacking – Christmas or not, that’s the gift worth unwrapping.
The feature is the strength because it builds rather than just pays: combinations grow turn by turn, and a spin that looks like a dud can still end with half the board covered. That slow accumulation is the best idea in the game.
The weakness is the price of admission. A 94.0% RTP is thin for the patience demanded, and the base game gives you almost nothing to do while you wait.
This is one for the long-haul player who liked the earlier Golden Donkey and fancies the same dig in December colours. Anyone who wants something to happen between bonuses will find the snow settles fast; those content to wait for one big payoff will feel right at home down this mine.
