Gorilla Jewels Charge Up Slot Review
Behind a temple of carved stone and wrapped vines, a waterfall tumbles through jungle so dense it crowds the reels, and a stone sun watches from above the frame. Gorilla Jewels Charge Up, from ReelPlay, hides its best game in plain sight: the paytable barely matters, and almost everything worth having is locked behind a meter you fill yourself.
The slot runs 10,000 ways across a 5×4 grid with an extra reel row riding above, at 96% RTP and medium-high volatility. Wins are capped at 208,320 in cash, which works out to 3,472x at the top 60 stake and a little more at lower ones. Stakes run from 0.25 to 60. The jungle keeps its own accounts, and it pays out on its own schedule.
10,000 Ways and a Reel Above
Wins pay left to right on adjacent reels, with 10,000 ways to land them across the main 5×4 grid. The reel row sitting above the frame isn’t decoration: for reels two to five it adds an extra symbol to the reel it sits above, and the Scatter Diamond appears on that top reel only.
Every winning symbol except the Scatter Diamond then explodes and is replaced by symbols falling from above on the reels and sliding in from the right on the top reel. So a single spin can chain several wins together. It’s a familiar cascade pattern, done cleanly.
The wild appears on reels two to five in the base game only, and substitutes for everything except the Collect, Coin and Diamond symbols. That’s the whole of its job, and it’s enough. Each symbol in a win can only be used once per winning combination, and only positions containing the winning symbol count towards it.
The paytable is where the jungle thins out a little. Payouts as multiples of the total bet, at the default stake:
- Top premium symbol: 6 pays 4x, 5 pays 2x, 4 pays 0.60x, 3 pays 0.40x
- Second premium symbol: 6 pays 2x, 5 pays 1x, 4 pays 0.40x, 3 pays 0.32x
- Third premium symbol: 6 pays 2x, 5 pays 1x, 4 pays 0.40x, 3 pays 0.32x
- Fourth premium symbol: 6 pays 2x, 5 pays 1x, 4 pays 0.40x, 3 pays 0.20x
- Royals, group one: 6 pays 0.8x, 5 pays 0.4x, 4 pays 0.2x, 3 pays 0.24x
- Royals, group two: 6 pays 0.8x, 5 pays 0.4x, 4 pays 0.2x, 3 pays 0.12x
- Royals, group three: 6 pays 0.8x, 5 pays 0.4x, 4 pays 0.2x, 3 pays 0.12x
- Royals, group four: 6 pays 0.8x, 5 pays 0.4x, 4 pays 0.2x, 3 pays 0.10x
Only the highest win per combination counts, and coinciding wins are added together. Modest numbers, in other words. The paytable isn’t where this game keeps its promises.
The Charge Up Meter
Every Scatter Diamond that lands in the base game is collected into the Charge Up meter. Fill it with twenty of them and one of two things happens: either one of the three upgrades unlocks, or the Bonus Respins fire outright.
Four Scatter Diamonds landing on a single spin trigger the Bonus Respins directly, and they still count towards the meter. Any surplus scatters are processed once the feature finishes, so nothing you land is ever wasted.
The meter is tracked separately at each bet level, and each bet level starts with all upgrades locked. Change your stake and you start from zero. Pick a stake and stay on it, or the jungle keeps what you banked.
Charge Up Bonus Respins
The round begins with an empty grid and three respins. Any Coin that lands is held in place, and each new Coin, Collect or Diamond symbol resets the respins back to three. Respins end when the count runs out or every visible position is filled. All positions without held symbols spin each time.
Coins carry prizes as multiples of the total bet: 0.2x, 0.4x, 1x, 2x or 4x. When Collect lands, its value is the sum of the prizes on all surrounding symbols, up to eight positions including diagonals, and it can even absorb an already-held Collect. Surrounding means one space left, right, above, below or diagonal from the Collect.
A Collect with nothing around it earns nothing and isn’t held. Symbol pays from the paytable don’t apply during the round, and everything is settled from the held Coins and Collects when the respins finish, at the bet that triggered them. It’s a Hold and Win structure with an unusual amount of arithmetic attached to the Collect symbol.
Coin Up
Orange Diamonds appear on the top reels during the respins, and each one may upgrade a held Coin or Collect prize by 0.2x, 0.4x, 1x, 2x or 4x of the total bet. These upgrades are applied before any Collect events, so an Orange Diamond can raise the value a Collect is about to sweep up.
Multi Boost
Purple Diamonds add 1 to a win multiplier that starts at 1. At the end of the round every Coin and Collect prize is multiplied by whatever the multiplier reached, and then it resets to 1 for the next one.
Extra Prize
Blue Diamonds feed a separate meter that begins empty, at 0x, and fills after three of them. Filling it adds 100x the total bet to the round’s tally and empties the meter again, so a long round can stack it more than once. If several upgrades land together, Coin Up resolves first, Multi Boost second, and Extra Prize last. Each upgrade can be unlocked once per bet level until the respins trigger at that level, and the round pays out at the bet it was triggered at.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.7/10
This is a slot you play for the growing feeling that something is being saved up. The reels themselves are quiet company, and the jungle stays lush while you wait, but every scatter nudges a meter closer to full, and the round you eventually get is partly one you built. That slow accumulation is the reason to sit down here at all.
The best thing about it is that the upgrades you bank genuinely change the round, so a patiently filled meter pays differently from a lucky four-scatter trigger. The worst is that twenty scatters is a long haul and the meter is wiped by any change of stake, which punishes exactly the fiddling slots encourage.
It’s a good home for the grinder who likes a persistent project and the discipline to stay on one stake. Anyone after fast, frequent bonus rounds will find this jungle quiet. The patient ones get the jewels; the gorilla has no interest in hurrying for anybody else.
