Gridiron Legends X UP Slot Review
A floodlit stadium at night, packed stands blurring into bands of orange and blue, the reels floating over yard lines under a bright lighting rig. Gridiron Legends X UP hides a patient arithmetic game inside all that Friday-night colour: it’s the rare collect slot where the prizes on the reels matter less than the multiplier ladder you spend the whole session building. It’s also the fairest build of Alchemy Gaming‘s X UP engine to date, running 96.20%, where Rey Gallo X UP asked for the same patience on a much thinner return.
The game runs a 5×4 grid with 1024 ways, high volatility, a hit rate of 20.97%, and stakes from 0.20 to 20.00. Sister titles Africa XUP and Bolt X UP run the same trail. The X UP ladder is the spine here, and it’s the part the whole game turns on.
Base Game & Features
Wins pay left to right across the 1024 ways, with matching symbols on adjacent reels. Only the highest combination pays per symbol. It’s a familiar engine, and the game doesn’t add anything to it. What makes the base game busier than most is the scatter traffic: Red, Blue and Gold Scatters all do different jobs, and none of them pay a ways win of their own except the Red.
Wild symbols appear as a championship ring and substitute for everything except scatters, bonus, cash, jackpot and collect symbols. That’s the wild’s whole story, and it’s a short one.
Cash Collect
Cash and jackpot prize symbols land on any reel, in both the base game and free spins. The Wide Receiver symbol appears on reels 1 and 5 and collects: one receiver takes every prize on the reels once, two receivers take everything twice. The receivers never form winning combinations themselves.
The prizes come in fixed tiers:
- Ball 1 cash symbols: 0.2x to 1x the bet
- Ball 2 cash symbols: 1.5x to 3x the bet
- Ball 3 cash symbols: 5x to 10x the bet
- MINI Jackpot: 15x the bet
- MINOR Jackpot: 50x the bet
- MAJOR Jackpot: 250x the bet
- MEGA Jackpot: 1000x the bet
Cash prizes and jackpots both feed through the X UP multiplier when it’s active, which is what turns a modest collect into something worth the wait. A full board at the top tier, swept twice by two receivers, is the sort of spin this whole format is built around.
X UP Trail
The X UP trail sits alongside the reels and climbs six levels, each carrying a multiplier applied to cash and jackpot prizes. Two Red Scatters award one X UP token, and the tokens don’t come easily: level 2 needs one, level 3 needs three, level 4 needs six, level 5 needs ten, and the top level needs fifteen. Three or more Red Scatters trigger the bonus instead, so the biggest scatter wins never feed the trail.
- Level 1: 1x to 2x
- Level 2: 2x to 4x
- Level 3: 3x to 6x
- Level 4: 5x to 8x
- Level 5: 8x to 10x
- Level 6: 10x, 12x or 15x
The second tier on each level comes from Blue Scatters, which land on reels 1 and 5 only. Two of them permanently upgrade one multiplier, working down from the highest level, and each multiplier can be upgraded once except level 6, which can go up twice. Those upgrades stick for the session.
The Gold Scatter lands on reel 1 in the base game and spends the current trail multiplier on any prizes present in that spin. It’s the one moment the trail pays out before free spins arrive. Blue Scatters disappear from the reels entirely once the 15x tier is unlocked, and tokens reset whenever free spins finish.
Gridiron Legends X UP Free Spins & Touchdown Bonus
Three or more Red Scatters anywhere award 8 free spins, with the active trail multiplier in place from the first spin. Red Scatters restrict to reels 1 and 5 during the feature, and two of them award two extra spins plus one token. Tokens collected inside the feature can push the multiplier higher mid-round. The feature can’t be retriggered, and the trail empties on the way out.
Bets and ways stay fixed at whatever the triggering spin carried, wins stack on top of base game totals, and the round plays out automatically. A triggered trail at level 6 keeps collecting nothing further: tokens can’t be gathered while the top level is active.
Upsizer
Before free spins begin, there’s an option to buy a higher starting multiplier, with the cost shown for confirmation before anything is charged. It’s only offered when the trigger arrives with an active X UP level between 1 and 5, so a maxed-out trail gets nothing to buy. The Upsizer runs at the same 96.20%, and it may be unavailable at higher stakes or in some regions.
Touchdown Bonus
Bonus symbols land on any reel and collect into slots above the reels. Fill all five and the Touchdown Bonus triggers: an expanded Wide Receiver locks reel 1 while reels 2 to 5 spin with only cash prizes and Trophy symbols. Every cash prize that lands is collected.
Gold, Silver, Red and Blue Trophies collect above the reels, and the round runs until any three of a kind match. The matching jackpot then pays on top of everything collected. Once it ends, the bonus slots reset and the build starts again.
Buy Feature
The Buy Feature sells immediate access to free spins from the base game, with the price displayed before confirmation. No purchase price tiers are published, so what any given buy costs depends on the current stake. The RTP doesn’t change on a purchase.
Winnings per transaction, across every payout and feature a single bet can set off, are capped at 15 000x the base bet, with anything beyond that forfeited. That transaction ceiling is the game’s maximum win.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.7/10
Under all the stadium lighting, this is a slow grind with one big payoff shape: you fill a ladder, you wait for the receiver to show, and every spin nudges something forward even when it pays nothing. That forward pull is the reason to pick it. The trail is the strength, and it’s not close. Blue Scatter upgrades stick, the Gold Scatter cashes the multiplier without costing the build, and the Touchdown Bonus gives the base game a second target most collect slots never bother with.
The weakness is the exit. Every free spins round empties your tokens on the way out, so the thing you spent the session earning is exactly the thing the game takes back. At 96.20% the maths at least pays properly for the re-earning, which is more than earlier builds of this engine offered.
This one suits the patient builder who calls a filled trail a good session in itself. Anyone after regular features will find the stadium pretty quiet between collections, and that’s a fair reason to look elsewhere. For collectors who don’t mind starting the drive again, the home crowd here is worth playing in front of.
