Kingdom Wardens

Kingdom Wardens Slot Review

A ring of weathered monoliths stands on a windswept plain, each carved with a sigil that burns amber against the stone, while turquoise and rose thunderheads pile up over blue mountains on the horizon. Kingdom Wardens is one of the better-looking fantasy slots you’ll come across, but that’s not the interesting thing about it. The interesting thing is that a game this plain to play has put all of its character into a single decision made the instant the bonus triggers.

That decision is which symbols turn golden for the Free Games, and it’s enough to carry the whole build. Vivid Gaming keeps the structure simple: a 5×3 grid with 10 paylines, and 10 Free Games from three Scatters. What happens inside them is the reason to load this one up.

Base Game & Features

Ten fixed paylines run left to right across five reels, and only the highest combination on a line counts towards a win. It’s a layout that needs no explanation, which suits a game saving its surprises for later. The wardens themselves pay like this, as multiples of the total bet:

• Red/Fire Male Elf – 2: 0.5x, 3: 3x, 4: 15x, 5: 100x
• Purple Male Elf – 2: 0.5x, 3: 2x, 4: 8x, 5: 40x
• Blue Female Elf – 2: 0.3x, 3: 1x, 4: 3x, 5: 15x
• Green Female Elf – 2: 0.3x, 3: 1x, 4: 3x, 5: 15x
• A – 3: 0.2x, 4: 0.5x, 5: 2x
• K – 3: 0.2x, 4: 0.5x, 5: 2x
• Q – 3: 0.1x, 4: 0.2x, 5: 1x
• J – 3: 0.1x, 4: 0.2x, 5: 1x
• 10 – 3: 0.1x, 4: 0.2x, 5: 1x

The royals are a long way behind the elves, and the gap between tiers is steep. The top symbol pays a hundred times what Q, J or 10 manage at five of a kind, and fifty times A or K. A full line of the Fire Elf at a modest stake is the kind of hit that makes a session.

The entry thresholds differ too. All four elves pay from two of a kind; the royals don’t pay at all until three land on a line. Any elf pairing on an active payline returns something, where a queen and a jack together return nothing. That makes the first two reels matter more than a ten-line grid usually allows.

The Wild appears on reels two and four only, one per reel at most, substitutes for everything except the Scatter, and expands to fill its reel whenever it forms part of a win. Wild and Scatter never share a reel, so a stacked wild can’t help build a trigger.

That placement is doing quiet work. Because the Wild sits on the middle reels, it lands in the middle of most line combinations rather than at their edges, so an expansion reaches the symbols either side of it. It also means the first and last reels never carry a wild, and every full-line win needs paying symbols at both ends.

The Scatter can land on any reel, again one per reel at most, and pays wherever it sits. Three of them pay 5x the bet, four pay 20x and five pay 100x, and three or more in the base game award 10 Free Games. It’s a familiar threshold, met at a familiar pace.

Kingdom Wardens Bonus Features & Free Spins

The Free Games are where Kingdom Wardens stops being a plain ten-liner. Everything that makes the round interesting happens in the first moment after it triggers, before a single free spin has played out.

When three, four or five Scatters start the round, one, two or three different symbols are chosen at random and turned into Golden Symbols for the whole of the Free Games. Wild and Scatter are never chosen, and no symbol is picked twice. Which symbols go golden depends entirely on how many Scatters paid your way in:

• Three Scatters – 10 Free Games, one Golden Symbol
• Four Scatters – 10 Free Games, two Golden Symbols
• Five Scatters – 10 Free Games, three Golden Symbols

A Golden Symbol holds its status for the entire round and returns every time it shows up. When it lands, it’s evaluated for wins across the reels with full reel expansion, and that evaluation happens only after line wins with the expanding Wild have been calculated. Line wins come first, then the gold.

The split matters for what a spin can pay twice. A wild-assisted line win and a golden expansion on the same spin are two separate calculations, so a good spin can collect through the paylines and then collect again through the gold. If several Golden Symbols form wins, expansions and payouts are processed sequentially, lowest payout rate to highest. The biggest expansion always lands last.

The round doesn’t grow while it runs: the set of Golden Symbols fixed at the start is the set you keep. What it can do is start again, because three or more Scatters during the Free Games award 10 Extra Free Spins, and the trigger doesn’t change the golden selections either.

Buy Feature

There’s a BUY FEATURE button fixed to the left of the reels, and clicking it opens a purchase window before anything is confirmed. The terms are flat:

• Cost – 100 times the current bet, every time
• Winnings – calculated at the current bet throughout the purchased period
• Tiers – none; one price buys the round

Because the price scales with the bet rather than sitting at a fixed figure, the buy costs the same relative amount at every stake level. And because the Free Games themselves don’t change when purchased, what 100x buys is the same round three Scatters would grant: ten spins and the golden selection that comes with them.

Our Honest Verdict

Overall Rating: 7.7/10

Playing Kingdom Wardens is a patient walk towards one moment. You spin a handsome ten-line game, the henge glowing away behind the reels, and you wait for three Scatters, because the round at the end of that wait is the reason anyone picks this over the hundred other fantasy slots on the shelf.

That round is the strength, and it earns it. Which symbols go golden is decided fresh every time you get there, so no two bonus rounds feel the same, and the countdown from smallest expansion to largest means a good spin builds instead of just paying. The weakness is everything either side of it: the base game is ten lines and a wild, honest and bare, and the royals pay so little that most spins between triggers are dead air.

For players who like a simple chase with one genuinely good idea waiting at the gate, this is easy to recommend. Anyone who wants constant features and modifiers between bonuses will find the plain stretches dull. The wardens keep a beautiful watch, but they only open the gate for the patient.
