Mustang Gold Megaways Slot Review
Pragmatic Play took the opportunity to bring the Big Time Gaming Megaways mechanic to their popular Mustang Gold series in September 2024, reimagining the original western-themed classic with dynamic grid expansion and cascading wins. The Mustang Gold Megaways experience represents a substantial shift in gameplay philosophy–where the original delivered consistent volatility with a generous 12,000x maximum win, the new Megaways iteration prioritises payline flexibility with up to 117,649 ways to win, though at the trade-off of a reduced 5,000x ceiling. For players drawn to low volatility action and the appeal of expanding reel mechanics, Mustang Gold Megaways delivers competent execution of a proven formula. Those seeking the raw win potential of the original may find the transition less immediately satisfying.
Base Game & Features
The game operates across a 6-reel grid with variable row counts–outer reels (1 and 6) can expand to 7 symbols, whilst middle reels (2-5) reach a maximum of 6 symbols. An additional horizontal top reel holds up to 4 positions, contributing to the dynamic payline structure. At full expansion, the game delivers up to 117,649 ways to win, fundamentally different from the fixed 25-payline approach of the original Mustang Gold.
The tumble mechanic drives the core gameplay momentum. After each winning combination, those symbols are removed and fresh symbols drop from above or slide in from the top reel, filling vacant spaces. This process repeats continuously until no new winning combinations form, allowing multiple consecutive wins from a single spin. The feature transforms what might otherwise be modest individual payouts into chains of success.
Symbol Hierarchy & Modifiers
Money Symbols land during both base game and free spins, revealing random cash values up to 15x the current stake. These symbols add unpredictability to the base grid and work in tandem with the collect mechanic during bonus rounds. Wild Symbols appear across reels 2-6, substituting for all symbols except Scatters, Money, and Collect symbols, providing standard win-completion functionality.
Jackpot Symbols present a tiered collection system. Four distinct tiers activate when landing simultaneously with the Collect symbol: the Mini Jackpot (20x bet), Minor Jackpot (50x bet), Major Jackpot (100x bet), and most significantly, the Grand Jackpot (2,500x bet). The Grand Jackpot represents a notable improvement over the original game’s 1,000x equivalent, appealing directly to players pursuing fixed jackpot mechanics.
Mustang Gold Megaways Free Spins
Free spins activation requires both a Scatter symbol and a Collect symbol to land simultaneously on the base game reels. Each Scatter symbol reveals between 1 and 5 free spins, with the Collector symbol aggregating all free spins into a single bank. This dual-symbol trigger creates a layer of anticipation beyond standard scatter mechanics.
The free spins round introduces the Golden Collect Symbol, a semi-sticky modifier that descends the grid collecting money values and additional free spin awards during the bonus. As the Golden Collect moves downward, it triggers respins, potentially accelerating win sequences. This mechanic differentiates the bonus experience from the base game significantly, adding a sense of progression and control to what is otherwise a random feature.
Gamble & Bonus Buy Features
Upon triggering free spins, players face a gamble option allowing up to 5 consecutive gamble attempts, with potential to escalate winnings from the initial scatter count up to 100 free spins total. However, a failed gamble results in forfeiting all accumulated free spins–a high-stakes mechanic suited only for players comfortable with all-or-nothing scenarios. This feature adds psychological engagement for risk-tolerant players whilst remaining safely skippable for the cautious.
Bonus Buy allows players to purchase direct entry into the free spins round for 120 times the current total bet. The purchase guarantees a minimum of 3 free spins, with additional free spins revealed through random scatter awards upon purchase activation. The cost-to-guarantee ratio has drawn mixed community feedback–whilst 120x is substantial, the mechanic provides a viable shortcut to the bonus for impatient players.
Ante Bet offers an optional enhancement, increasing the current stake by 50% to improve the likelihood of triggering free spins during standard play. This feature appeals to players pursuing bonus features during sessions, allowing controlled investment adjustments without altering base stake levels.
Our Honest Verdict
Mustang Gold Megaways represents a technically proficient reimagining of a beloved classic, though one that navigates significant trade-offs. The Megaways integration delivers expanded payline flexibility–up to 117,649 ways to win versus the original’s rigid 25-payline structure–and the tumble feature creates genuine win clustering potential. The 96.55% RTP sits comfortably above industry average, and the elevated Grand Jackpot (2,500x vs. 1,000x) rewards dedicated jackpot chasers. Pragmatic Play’s execution of the western theme remains visually confident, with contemporary graphics that modernise the original’s retro aesthetic.
The elephant in the room remains the maximum win reduction: from 12,000x in the original to 5,000x here. For players specifically pursuing jaw-dropping individual payouts, this represents a meaningful step backward. The low volatility (1/5 rating) softens this reality–wins land frequently enough that dry spells are rare, though payouts tend to feel incremental rather than substantial. The bonus buy cost (120x stake) also presents questionable value when only 3 free spins are guaranteed as the floor.
Mustang Gold Megaways will satisfy enthusiasts of Megaways mechanics and players drawn to the original’s western theme who accept the max win trade-off. It delivers solid entertainment value and above-average RTP, making it a respectable addition to Pragmatic Play’s portfolio. Those chasing maximum individual payouts, however, may find themselves questioning why they’re not simply returning to the original Mustang Gold’s more generous ceiling. It will more than suffice for the right audience, though it’s far from a watershed moment for the series.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is the RTP of Mustang Gold Megaways?
Mustang Gold Megaways offers an RTP of 96.55% as its primary tier, with alternative settings available at 95.56% and 94.48%. The variation depends on the specific casino operator’s preference and licensing requirements. The 96.55% primary RTP places the game well above the industry standard of 95-96%, making it a competitive offering within the Pragmatic Play portfolio. -
What is the maximum win in Mustang Gold Megaways?
The maximum win in Mustang Gold Megaways is 5,000x your total stake. This represents a significant reduction compared to the original Mustang Gold (which offered 12,000x), a deliberate design trade-off made to accommodate the expanded Megaways payline structure. The 5,000x ceiling remains substantial and achievable primarily through free spins rounds with Golden Collect accumulation and jackpot triggering. -
Is Mustang Gold Megaways a low volatility game?
Yes, Mustang Gold Megaways is classified as a low volatility (1/5) game. Low volatility means that winning combinations occur more frequently during base play, though they tend to be smaller when they do materialise. This positioning suits players who prefer a steadier stream of wins without extended dry spells, particularly during free spins modes. -
How many paylines or ways to win does Mustang Gold Megaways have?
Mustang Gold Megaways features up to 117,649 ways to win through the Big Time Gaming Megaways mechanic. Unlike traditional payline systems with fixed numbers, the Megaways structure means the number of win combinations changes dynamically with each spin based on how many symbols land on each reel. This variability is core to the Megaways experience, offering theoretically greater flexibility than the original Mustang Gold’s 25 fixed paylines. -
How do you trigger free spins in Mustang Gold Megaways?
Free spins are triggered by landing both a Scatter symbol and a Collect symbol simultaneously on the base game reels. Each Scatter symbol you land reveals between 1 and 5 free spins, and the Collector symbol gathers all revealed spins into a single total. Players can then choose to gamble their free spins (with risk of losing them entirely for a chance at up to 100 total spins) or proceed directly into the bonus round. -
What are the jackpot symbols in Mustang Gold Megaways?
Mustang Gold Megaways includes four fixed jackpot symbols with distinct payout tiers: the Mini Jackpot (20x bet), Minor Jackpot (50x bet), Major Jackpot (100x bet), and Grand Jackpot (2,500x bet). These jackpots are won when a jackpot symbol lands on the same spin as a Collect symbol, automatically triggering the corresponding payout. The Grand Jackpot notably increased from the original game’s 1,000x, making it more appealing to players pursuing fixed jackpot mechanics. -
What is the tumble feature in Mustang Gold Megaways?
The tumble feature (also referred to as cascading wins or tumbling reels) activates after every winning combination in both base game and free spins. Winning symbols are removed from the grid, and new symbols drop down to fill the empty spaces. If these newly positioned symbols create additional winning combinations, the process repeats automatically until no new wins form. This mechanic transforms single spins into potential cascades of consecutive payouts. -
Can you buy free spins in Mustang Gold Megaways?
Yes, you can purchase direct entry into the free spins bonus round for 120 times your total current bet. This Bonus Buy feature guarantees a minimum of 3 free spins upon activation, with the opportunity to receive additional free spins through random scatter reveals during the purchase. You can then choose to gamble those spins for the chance to increase them further (up to 100 maximum), though failed gambles result in losing all spins.
