Reel the Rum Slot Review
A grinning skull sits on the reels between a compass, a cannon and a barrel of rum. Reel the Rum buries its best prizes in the base game rather than the bonus: the coins that land during ordinary play are worth more than the symbols around them, and the game knows it.
Boomerang built it on a 6×4 grid with ways pays rather than fixed lines, running at 96% RTP with medium-high volatility and stakes from 0.25 to 50 per spin. Its coin-chasing bones are shared with 3 Wonders Mystic Howl, and it sits in the studio’s catalogue alongside Elemental Forces Embers and Witches Wild Fortune.
Roughly one spin in four forms a win, at a stated hit rate of 27.47%, so the base game keeps ticking over while the coins do their quiet work. Whether that adds up to a bounty worth chasing is what follows.
Base Game & Features
The reels turn up a familiar pirate haul. Royals A, K, Q and J fill the lower end, with five themed symbols paying above them:
- Cannon
- Barrel of rum
- Potion
- Compass
- Skull
The skull is the one that earns its place on the reel frame, and the lower royals are the ones you’ll see most. Nothing here breaks from the pirate template, but the set is coherent: every symbol belongs on this ship, and the gap between a royal win and a themed-symbol win is where the medium-high volatility makes itself felt.
Wins form across the 6×4 grid on ways rather than on fixed paylines, so matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left are enough. There’s no line map to study, which keeps play simple: spin, match from the left, get paid.
The wild is a pirate captain, and it does exactly what a wild should: substitute for any paying symbol to complete or extend a way. It only appears on the last two reels, which keeps it useful without letting it dominate the grid. A captain wild on reels five and six can close out a long way that the earlier reels started.
Alongside the paying symbols, coins carrying cash values land in the base game. They pay nothing on their own. Their job is to build towards the feature rounds, where every coin on the grid suddenly counts.
The pace is steady rather than spectacular. With medium-high volatility and that 27.47% hit rate, small ways wins arrive regularly enough to keep the balance moving, but the coins are the real story of every spin.
The coin system has two moving parts, and each has its own trigger:
- Six or more coins on the grid: Hold & Respins
- Collect symbol landing with coins on the reels: coin prizes collected, with a multiplier applied
One thing is worth settling early: the maximum win on this one is 4,759x the stake. The prize ceiling that matters is the 888x a single coin can carry, and the multipliers stacked on top of it in the features.
Reel the Rum Bonus Features
Hold & Respins
Hold & Respins is the main event, and it works in four steps:
- Six or more coins land anywhere on the grid in a single spin
- Every coin locks in place with its cash value attached
- The remaining positions respin in search of more coins
- When the respins run out, every coin prize on the grid is collected and paid
The round runs inside 5×4 feature frames rather than the full 6×4 base grid, so the playfield tightens once the feature begins. Each coin carries a cash prize of up to 888x the stake, which is the largest single value anywhere in the game.
Coins landing during the respins lock in alongside the originals, filling the frame one position at a time. A coin arriving on a respin resets the tension nicely: the grid grows, the running total grows with it, and the round only ends when the respins stop improving on what’s there.
Every locked coin keeps its original value for the final collection. That’s the whole engine of the round: more coins, more respins, bigger collection. The total paid at the end is simply the sum of whatever sits on the grid.
Collect Multiplier
The Collect symbol is the second half of the coin economy. It only matters when coins are on the reels at the same time, and when it lands alongside them, it sweeps up their prizes.
Better still, the Collect Multiplier can boost that sweep to as much as x5, meaning every coin value on the grid pays up to five times over in a single hit. A screen of fat coins meeting a maxed Collect is the round this whole game is built to deliver.
The two features feed off the same fuel. Coins stack the Hold & Respins grid, and the same coins become ammunition for the Collect sweep, so nothing that lands during play is ever wasted.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.1/10
Playing Reel the Rum is a patient sort of plunder. The reels keep paying small ways wins, but the real reason to board is the coins: watching them stack up knowing any one of them could carry 888x is the whole appeal.
The Collect Multiplier is the sharpest cutlass here. It turns a screen of loose change into a sweep worth up to five times the total, which is a genuinely mean mechanic in a game this polite on the surface.
What lets it down is the padding. The pirate dressing never commits and the symbol pays are forgettable, though the maximum win of 4,759x the stake at least puts an X on the treasure map for the coin chase. It suits hold-and-win players who enjoy a slow build and a collect mechanic with bite; anyone after a headline jackpot should raid a different island.
