Scrolls of Persia Slot Review
Gold filigree, domed palaces and a single weathered scroll sitting beside the reels: Scrolls of Persia dresses like a hundred games before it, and then pays nothing like most of them. The argument of this one is that a 94.0% return and super high volatility can sit inside a 5×3, 10-payline frame that looks reassuringly ordinary, because every payout of note depends on one symbol growing to swallow the reels.
SpinOn built the whole game around that scroll. It’s a more mechanics-led entry than Aurora Storm or Captain Cashmap, closer in spirit to the expanding-symbol template of Dr. Cranko’s Lab.
Stakes run from 0.1 to 35 per spin. The maximum win is 20,000x the stake, and that matters more than it usually would, because everything else about the maths points at big, rare payouts.
Base Game & Features
All 10 paylines are active on every spin and can’t be changed, with wins paying left to right across the 5×3 grid. The Scroll is the symbol doing all the work.
It’s both the wild and the scatter, appearing on all reels in the base game and free spins, up to one per reel. As a wild it substitutes for all regular symbols, and it pays only when five land on a payline.
Random Expansion Feature
At the start of any base game spin, any regular symbol except the scatter can be randomly selected as the Expanding Symbol. The Scroll appears beside the reels to show which symbol was picked.
If two or more of the same high paying symbols, or three or more of the same low paying symbols, land one per reel, that symbol expands to fill only the reels it appears on. A frame marks the expanding symbols.
The expansion transforms all regular symbols on that reel into the Expanding Symbol and pays based on how many symbols appear on the line. Wins from the initial spin are added to wins from the expanding symbols, and regular and expanding versions of a symbol pay identically.
A Scroll that lands can also turn into the chosen symbol and expand if it completes or enhances a win in the base game. So the wild isn’t only a substitute here – it can become the win itself.
Respin Feature
If exactly two scatters land and the spin produced no other wins, one extra respin is granted. The reels without a scatter spin again to give the scatter another chance to land.
The free spins feature activates if one, two or three scatters appear as a result of the respin. Any win combinations from the respin itself aren’t awarded. The respin is available only in the base game without the SpinON+ option active.
Hit Rate and Pacing
Hit frequency is 31.62%, so roughly three spins in ten produce a win of some kind. With super high volatility, those wins skew small. The respin and random expansion features are what keep the base game moving between bonuses.
Scrolls of Persia Free Spins & Bonus Features
Three, four or five scatters anywhere on the reels trigger 10 free spins. Before the feature starts, one regular paying symbol is randomly selected to expand for the entire series.
During free spins the Scroll changes job. It doesn’t expand any more. Instead, every scatter that lands guarantees one of five features:
- Extra Free Spins – adds one additional free spin
- Increase Multiplier – the series runs a win multiplier that starts at x1 and increases for all monetary wins when this scatter lands
- Collect Meter – adds one progress point to the Collection Meter
- Convert Scatter – converts the scatter into the current Expanding Symbol for that free spin only
- Upgrade Expanding Symbol – upgrades the Expanding Symbol to the next symbol in the fixed sequence, lowest to highest
Multiple scatters on the same free spin trigger multiple features at once. If a symbol can’t be upgraded further, the multiplier increases instead, and all multiplier increases last only for the duration of the feature.
The upgrade has a second effect worth spelling out. When an Upgrade scatter lands, every current expanding symbol and the symbol at the start of the meter are replaced by the upgraded symbol, so one scatter can reset the whole round in your favour mid-series.
Collection Meter
The meter holds six progress points and runs only during free spins. The active Expanding Symbol is shown at the start of the meter. Points come from how many reels hold expanded symbols:
- 3 reels with expanded symbols – 2 points
- 4 reels – 3 points
- 5 reels – 6 points
Completing the meter grants two additional free spins and upgrades the Expanding Symbol, following the same lowest-to-highest sequence. Points beyond six carry over to the next cycle, so a big expansion spin isn’t wasted.
Retriggers
Landing three or more scatters during free spins retriggers the feature and awards another 10 free spins. Free spins play at the bet that triggered them.
When free spins and the Random Expansion feature trigger in the same round, the expansion plays out first and the free spins begin afterwards. Wins from the free spin mode are added to the total win of the round.
SpinON+
SpinON+ is the game’s purchase option, switched on with its own button before you spin. Two tiers are available:
- Double Chance – 5x total bet, improves the odds of Expanding Symbols landing. RTP: 94.0%
- Free Spins Guarantee – 100x total bet, guarantees 10 free spins with an Expanding Symbol. RTP: 94.0%
Both options run at the same 94.0% return as the standard game. The wins may not cover the cost of the bet, and at 100x the stake that’s a real risk on a single purchase.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 6.5/10
This is a waiting game. Long stretches where three in ten spins return pocket change, the occasional expansion to break it up, and the palace doors only really open in the bonus. The reason to sit with it is that free spins round: it’s the best thing here by a distance, because five stacking scatter features and a meter that carries points forward mean a single series can keep escalating instead of running out of road.
The weakness is the maths underneath. A 94.0% return is a genuinely poor take for a game demanding this much patience, and the bonus itself never promises to cover the trip there. At 100x for a guaranteed round, that sting is felt up front.
It’s for players who love the expanding-symbol format and want one with more machinery inside the bonus than the classic template. Anyone who wants their sessions gentle has better palaces to visit, even with a ceiling of 20,000x the stake to chase. Those who stay will find the scrolls open generously, now and then.
