Clovers and Diamonds 40 Slot Review
Shamrocks blur across the backdrop and three jackpot plaques gleam above the reels, yet Clovers and Diamonds 40 is really a one-reel game wearing 40 lines: nearly everything worth winning routes through the middle of the grid. Everything either side of reel three is fruit-machine furniture, and the game is honest about that. Strip away the expanded wilds and the multiplier that live at its centre, and what’s left is a paytable from another decade.
That centre is worth the trip, though. The game runs on a 5×3 grid with 40 paylines at a total RTP of 96.58%, built by FAZI. You can see the same retro instincts in Bonus Wild 81 Extralines and October Hot 40.
Base Game & Features
The reel set is boxed in a thick gold-yellow border with the logo in orange and blue block letters tucked into the top-left corner, a small clover underneath. It’s glossy, bright and unapologetically retro, closer to a pub machine in fresh paint than to anything chasing modern production values. The backdrop is a deep green wash, darkest in the corners and brightest behind the reels.
Wins pay across 40 fixed lines, left to right, with only the highest combination on each line counting. Line wins in different combinations add together, so a spin can collect several small line hits at once. The symbol ladder is pure fruit-machine stock, and the values are worth a close look.
- 7 – two pays 0.25x, three pays 1.25x, four pays 5x, five pays 75x
- Bell – three pays 1x, four pays 2.5x, five pays 12.5x
- Grape or Watermelon – three pays 0.5x, four pays 1x, five pays 5x
- Cherry, Lemon or Orange – three pays 0.25x, four pays 0.5x, five pays 2x
Those bottom-rung values are the ones you’ll see most: a line of three lemons returns a quarter of the stake, and even five of them only doubles your money. The 7 is the only symbol that pays for two, and its 75x five-of-a-kind is the number everything else in the game orbits around.
As multiples of the stake the shape of the ladder is plain: five 7s returns 75x, five bells 12.5x, and five grapes or watermelons 5x, and the same multiples apply at every stake level.
Two wild modifiers do the heavy lifting between regular wins, and they’re not the same animal.
- Expanding Wild – appears on reels two, three and four, makes the entire reel wild and substitutes for all symbols except the scatter
- Wild Multiplier – appears only on reel three, turns the entire reel wild, and multiplies any winning line it’s part of by x2, x3, x5, x10 or x20
The Expanding Wild is the everyday version. Simple, and it does its job without ceremony. Because it only lands on the middle three reels, it can’t build a five-of-a-kind on its own, but on 40 lines a full wild reel regularly completes several line wins at once.
The rarer cousin is the one to care about. It occupies the same third reel, so the two never appear together on it. On a grid where the top symbol pays 75x for five, a x20 multiplier on the right line is where the real money in this game sits.
Clovers and Diamonds 40 Bonus Features
Three progressive Mystery Jackpots sit above the reels in gold, blue and grey panels: Gold, Diamond and Platinum. Each has a fixed award and increment, and each is fed by a small slice of every spin. Of the 96.58% total RTP, Gold contributes 0.06%, Diamond 0.05% and Platinum 0.03%.
A jackpot pays out when a randomly chosen target amount is reached, so there’s no bonus round to trigger and no skill in the timing. It’s a raffle running quietly in the background, and every bet is a ticket whether you’re watching the plaques or not.
The Super Spin drops in unannounced, a banner across the screen with multiple wilds in play. There’s no stated trigger and no stated award; it arrives, it boosts a spin, and the reels carry on as before. Because the wilds land across the middle reels, its value comes from the same line-completing work the standard expanded wilds do, just more of it at once.
The Gamble
After any win, the x2 button opens a red-or-black choice. It’s the classic double-or-nothing, and the sequence is a short one.
- Press x2 after a win to open the gamble
- Choose red or black
- A correct guess doubles the win
- A wrong guess loses the gamble amount and ends the game
Gamble wins are capped, and that cap is the ceiling on the whole game: no payout in Clovers and Diamonds 40, jackpot or otherwise, gets past it. Five 7s with a x20 multiplier behind them is the practical peak of the paytable.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 6.3/10
This is a game you sit down with for one reason: reel three and the x20 that lives there, with a 75x top symbol waiting to be multiplied. The clovers, the fruit and the gamble are the wallpaper you wait in front of, and the waiting is most of the session.
Its best idea is the Mystery Jackpots, because they run on every single spin without asking anything of you. Its worst is everything either side of the middle: the symbol values are thin, and when the multiplier stays quiet there’s precious little to show for a run of spins.
It suits players who like their machines old-fashioned but want one modern spike in the middle of them, and it’s the wrong pick for anyone after elaborate bonus rounds. For a game set in a field of shamrocks, it keeps its luck concentrated in one small patch, and for the right player that patch is enough.
