Golden Donkey XMAS Slot Review
A donkey in a Santa hat grins through a snow-flecked farmhouse window, warm tree-light washing over the plank walls of AceRun‘s festive barn. Golden Donkey XMAS puts a four-tier jackpot ladder on show above the reels. Underneath, it pairs an expanding wild with two bonus routes: a scatter-triggered free games round that can be retriggered, and a Hold & Win bonus game where the coins and jackpots are collected.
It’s a 5×3 grid with 25 paylines, medium-high volatility, and a top prize of 1,340x your bet, with stakes from 0.25 to 200. The supplier’s game sheet puts the overall theoretical RTP at 94%. XMAS is a different machine from the one our Golden Donkey Xpand review found in 2026. It sits closer in spirit to Golden Donkey Christmas Xpand than to its board-stretching sibling.
Base Game & Features
This is a classic five-reel, three-row layout with 25 fixed paylines. Wins pay from the leftmost reel to the right. The hit frequency sits at 21.0915%, so roughly one spin in five returns something. That’s a fair clip for a medium-high volatility game. It’s frequent enough to keep the balance moving, without promising that any of those returns will be large.
The paytable is a familiar farmyard ladder, with the farmer at the top and the letters propping up the bottom. Here’s what each symbol pays, expressed as a multiple of the total bet:
- Man (Farmer) – 0.6x for three, 2x for four, 10x for five
- Money Bag – 0.2x for three, 1.6x for four, 8x for five
- Bottle (Wineskin) – 0.2x for three, 1.2x for four, 6x for five
- Horseshoe – 0.2x for three, 1x for four, 4x for five
- J, Q, K, A – 0.2x for three, 0.4x for four, 2x for five
The bottom of the table is flat almost everywhere. Every symbol listed here except the farmer pays 0.2x for a three-of-a-kind, so the smallest wins look identical no matter which symbol lined up. Only the four and five-of-a-kind combinations really separate the rungs.
That shape has a practical consequence. With roughly one spin in five returning something, and many of those returns sitting near the minimum, a run of “winning” spins can still leave the balance lower than it started. Line wins are the steady grind here. The bigger moments come from the bonus features.
Expanding Wild
According to the supplier’s game sheet, the wild symbol expands and substitutes for all symbols during the base game except the Scatter and Bonus symbols. It helps complete combinations that would otherwise fall short. When a winning combination containing a substitute can be read in more than one way, only the highest win combination is paid.
Scatter and Free Games
The scatter is a Donkey symbol that appears on reels 2, 3 and 4 only. During the base game, three scatters trigger 8 free games. Landing three scatters again during the feature retriggers it. Scatter symbols don’t need to sit on a payline to award their prize. Once the free games are complete, all wins are added to any win from the spin that activated them.
The two features also connect. If the Hold & Win bonus game (six or more bonus coins) lands during the free games, the bonus coins are held and the bonus game starts instantly from that combination. When it finishes, the free games continue with the next free game.
Golden Donkey XMAS Bonus Features & Jackpots
Hold & Win Bonus Game
Six or more bonus coins trigger the Hold & Win bonus game. Bonus symbols pay only during this round, and there are no normal line wins inside it, only coins and jackpots. The feature starts with 3 free spins. Whenever one or more bonus symbols (or a jackpot) land, the count resets to 3. The round ends when the free spins run out or when every position holds a coin. If every position shows bonus coins or jackpots, the Grand jackpot is also awarded on top of the other wins.
The Jackpot Ladder
A four-tier jackpot ladder sits on boards above the reels, with snow banked along their tops. The bonus game includes Mini, Minor, Major and Grand bonus symbols, and each one awards its matching jackpot. As multiples of the bet, the ladder reads:
- Grand – 1,000x the bet
- Major – 150x
- Minor – 50x
- Mini – 20x
Because the boards are always visible, every spin plays out directly under the prizes the bonus game is built around. The gap between the Mini and the Grand is wide, which gives the Hold & Win round a genuine sense of escalation.
It’s worth being clear about scale. The supplier gives a default maximum multiplier of 1,340x, and notes that the maximum recorded win happened once in 1,000,000,000 simulated game rounds. That’s modest by the standards of some modern slots, and medium-high volatility means the swings are real but not brutal.
The betting range, 0.25 to 200, covers everyone from a casual festive flutter to a serious stake. The same barn, the same boards and the same features are on offer either way.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 6.2/10
Golden Donkey XMAS feels a lot like that barn: pretty, cosy and warmly lit. Around one spin in five gives something back, and the line amounts are mostly small. The real draw is the row of jackpots glowing overhead and the Hold & Win round that awards them, all wrapped in tinsel with the donkey grinning at you.
The design is easy to follow. There are 25 lines, an expanding wild, retriggerable free games from three scatters, and a Hold & Win bonus game whose free spins reset with every new coin or jackpot. The free games and bonus game can also chain together. The weak spot is the flat low end of the paytable, which makes the stretches between features feel like a grind.
This is a slot for players who enjoy Hold & Win mechanics and free spins with a retrigger, and who like having a fixed prize ladder to watch. It’s a 94% RTP game, a figure some players will want to weigh up before settling in. It won’t change your mind about the genre, but the barn is warm and the lights are on.
