Gunpowder Slot Review
Gunpowder is Peter & Sons’ foray into naval warfare, a pirate-themed slot that combines stylish visuals with rewarding mechanics. Released in May 2024, this 5-reel, 10-payline game immediately captures attention with its animated Jolly Roger skull and ghost pirate ships creating an atmospheric battlefield on the reels. The game strikes a nice balance between creative design and engaging gameplay, making it an intriguing option for players seeking high volatility action with substantial win potential.
Base Game & Features
Gunpowder operates on a straightforward 5×3 grid with 10 fixed paylines, offering flexibility with bets ranging from €0.10 to €50 per spin. The game’s 96.1% RTP (default setting) sits above industry average, making it reasonably rewarding for long-term play. What sets Gunpowder apart from typical pirate slots is its emphasis on sticky wild mechanics and the innovative Phantom Power feature that triggers both in base and bonus rounds.
Sticky Wilds and Respins
Natural sticky wilds form a core part of Gunpowder’s gameplay appeal. When wilds land on the reels, they lock in place and trigger automatic respins. Multiplier values of 1x, 2x, and 3x are applied to these sticky wilds, meaning you can build wins gradually as respins continue. The respins continue until no additional winning symbols land, creating those satisfying moments where wins accumulate across multiple consecutive spins.
Phantom Power Feature
The Phantom Power mechanic is Gunpowder’s standout feature, activated randomly during both base and bonus play. In the base game, triggering wilds through Phantom Power initiates respins. More impressively, during free spins, this feature transforms high-paying symbols into sticky wilds–with Gold Ships quite literally battling surrounding symbols. Winners of these confrontations become locked multiplier wilds valued at 1x, 2x, or 3x, dramatically boosting your potential for significant payouts.
Golden Bet Enhancement
For players wanting to amplify their chances, the Golden Bet option costs an additional 50% of your current bet. This enhancement increases the probability of landing sticky wilds and triggering free spins, making it an appealing choice for those who enjoy boosting the action during their gaming session.
Gunpowder Free Spins
Free spins represent the centerpiece of Gunpowder’s bonus engine. Land three, four, or five Treasure Chest scatter symbols anywhere on the reels to trigger 10, 12, or 15 free spins respectively. Should all reels display at least one wild during the trigger, you’ll receive an additional 5 spins as a bonus–a feature that rewards fully loaded reels. The free spins round maintains all base game features, meaning sticky wilds and Phantom Power continue to provide winning opportunities.
Bonus Buy and Retrigger Potential
Impatient players can bypass the scatter hunt entirely with the Bonus Buy feature, costing 170x your current bet to access the free spins round. You’ll receive between 7 and 12 free spins at random, offering a gamble for those wanting instant bonus action. Retriggers are possible during free spins, meaning additional scatters can extend your bonus session and compound your winnings through continued sticky wild and Phantom Power activation.
Our Honest Verdict
- Overall Verdict: 7.5/10
- Gunpowder delivers a thrilling naval-themed experience that punches above its weight despite some limitations. Peter & Sons have created a visually stunning slot with phenomenal graphics and creative design that stands out amongst typical pirate offerings. The combination of sticky wilds, Phantom Power mechanics, and respins creates genuinely engaging gameplay moments–particularly during free spins rounds when multipliers can reach meaningful levels. The 96.1% default RTP paired with high volatility positioning makes it ideal for players seeking bigger wins despite less frequent hits. However, the 18.87% hit frequency is genuinely demanding, and the maximum €50 bet cap may disappoint high-rollers. The game won’t hold every player’s attention indefinitely, though its straightforward approach with decent features delivers solid returns. Gunpowder stands out as another noteworthy release from Peter & Sons, combining impressive aesthetics with mechanics that genuinely reward engaged play. It’s perfect for volatility-seekers who appreciate quality production values and don’t mind some patience between wins.
