Hold the Joker Slot Review
A harlequin in a red-and-gold corseted costume leans in beside the reels, cradling a black hat that spills blue light onto her face. Hold the Joker barely cares whether its symbols pay: the five-of-a-kind Diamond returns just 10x, and that’s the point. This is a slot that pays almost nothing on the spin in front of you and everything to the machinery left behind on it. Northern Lights Gaming have built it on a 5×4 grid with 20 fixed paylines, running at 96.06% RTP on medium volatility.
Sister titles like Rock the Cash Bar, Unusual Suspects and Panda Bonanza play much more conventional games. Here, patience isn’t a virtue the marketing copy gestures at, it’s the whole design. The jester on the stage knows something you don’t yet, and she’s in no hurry to share it.
Base Game & Features
Wins run left to right across the 20 paylines, and only the highest combination per line counts. Stakes run from 0.20 to 15.00 per spin, which is a narrower ceiling than most modern releases offer. The top of the paytable looks like this:
- Diamond – 10x stake for five, 2.5x for four, 1x for three
- 7 – 5x for five, 1x for four, 0.5x for three
- Bell – 3x for five, 0.5x for four, 0.2x for three
- Dice – 2x for five, 0.3x for four, 0.1x for three
- Grapes, Raspberry, Watermelon, Lemon, Cherry – 1x for five, 0.3x for four, 0.1x for three
Those are modest base numbers, and they tell you where this game keeps its money: in the features. The Wild substitutes for everything except the Scatter and the Joker, and Golden Wilds spawn additional Wilds or another Golden Wild when they land. That’s the whole wild story in a sentence, but it matters more than it sounds, because of what Wilds leave behind.
Wild Sticky Frames
Every Wild that lands leaves a x1 Sticky Frame on the reels. Frame multipliers can climb to x5, though they only apply during the Joker Wild bonus. The board doesn’t reset after every spin in the usual way, and that’s the design: empty frames sit there waiting for the right symbol.
Joker Wild Bonus
Land the Joker and it fills every Sticky Frame with Wild symbols, applying each frame’s multiplier to any win on that line. In the base game, the frames clear once the bonus resolves. In Free Spins they stay until the round ends, which is where the multipliers start to matter properly.
Bonus Boost Bar and Nudging Respins
The Scatter pays nothing itself and can’t be substituted, but it does the legwork. Two Scatters anywhere add a token to the Bonus Boost Bar, and 50 tokens fill it for an extra pick when Free Spins begin. Progress is banked at your chosen stake and resets once the bar has been used.
Two Scatters on the top three rows trigger the Nudging Scatter Respin. Scatter-holding reels nudge down one row while the rest respin, and the feature keeps going until a Scatter reaches the bottom row or five land. Each respin that leaves two Scatters standing adds another Boost token. It’s a small thing, but it gives near-misses a second life.
Top Hat Jackpot
Symbols can carry glowing Orb overlays, and collecting them can randomly trigger the Top Hat Jackpot. Twelve top hats hide GRAND, MAJOR, MINOR and MINI prizes, and you pick until you match three of a kind. One prize only, and it can hit in the base game or Free Spins. Orbs collected are saved per bet.
Hold the Joker Free Spins & Bonuses
Free Spins
Three, four or five Scatters award 10, 15 or 20 Free Spins respectively. During the round, each Joker symbol highlights one position up the Free Spins trail, and it also triggers the Joker Wild bonus if frames are on the board. Reaching a Suit position on the trail awards five extra spins plus a multiplier: x2, x3, x5 or x10 for each of the four suits.
Because frames persist through the whole round, a well-stacked board of x3 and x5 frames meeting a late Joker is where this game’s biggest moments live. The trail resets when the feature ends, so the build is per-round, not permanent.
Bonus Boost
Every Free Spins entry starts with a card pick, and up to five perks can be revealed:
- Boost Perk – unlocks the first Suit on the trail and awards 5 extra spins with x2 multiplier
- +2 Spins Perk – start with two extra spins
- +Frames Perk – adds a random selection of frames onto the reels
- +Wilds Perk – more Wild symbols during Free Spins
- +Joker Perk – more Joker symbols during Free Spins
- No Perk – ends the Bonus Boost
A filled Bonus Boost Bar grants an extra pick. It’s a pre-round that decides what kind of Free Spins you’re actually playing, and the difference between a boosted entry and a bare one is substantial.
Bonus Spin
After the last Free Spin there’s a chance at one Bonus Spin, and a Joker is guaranteed to land in it. That Joker doesn’t advance the trail, but it does fill the frames. A free board-clearing symbol after the round has technically ended is a neat closing touch.
Buy Free Spins
The BUY FREE SPINS button skips the Scatter chase and starts the round immediately, at a price shown at your current bet. The buy runs at 96.10% RTP, marginally above the standard game’s 96.06%. It’s available in the base game only.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.7/10
Most sessions here feel like watching a stage being set: reels collecting frames, the bar filling, one scatter short of the door. The reason to choose it is that payoff, when a late Joker fills a board of grown multipliers and the cabaret finally earns its velvet. It’s a genuinely satisfying climax, and this game earns it better than most.
The cost is everything before it. Line wins are small, the 15.00 stake ceiling is stingy, and the long quiet stretches between Jokers are real – this is a slow game wearing a loud costume.
It’s a good home for patient players on modest budgets who like watching a board come together, and medium volatility keeps that affordable. Anyone after quick hits or big-stake action is at the wrong show. For the rest, the jester’s hat is worth holding.
