Muertos Magic Slot Review
Dawn is breaking over a Mexican street, roses spill down a carved stone archway, and a little wooden grave-marker shaped like a house keeps watch beside the reels. Indigo Magic have done something quietly contrary with Muertos Magic: a Día de los Muertos slot with no neon and no sugar-skull overload, just a hand-painted dawn street in soft apricot and bougainvillea pink. The calm is the point. This is a game that saves every drop of its energy for two bonus rounds and spends almost none of it in between, and whether that patience is a virtue or a chore is the honest question a 5×3 grid with 25 lines has to answer.
The numbers underneath are straightforward. It runs at an RTP of 86.22% to 96%, which the casino sets, on medium volatility across 5×3 reels and 25 fixed paylines paying left to right. Studio stablemate Shields of Fury covers similar ground for players who want their respins with more armour. Worth a look? Let’s see what’s under the marigolds.
Base Game & Features
Wins form on 25 fixed lines, all paying left to right on adjacent reels from the leftmost reel. Nothing exotic in the line mechanics, which suits a game whose interest lives in its bonus rounds rather than its base play.
The wild substitutes for other symbols and carries the top pays in the game:
- Five wilds: 20x the bet
- Four wilds: 10x
- Three wilds: 1x
That gap between four and five wilds is where the game’s biggest line pay sits, and the drop to three of a kind is steep: one tier lower, the wild pays a twentieth of the five-of-a-kind figure. It’s also doing ordinary substitution work on every spin, standing in for anything a paying line needs.
Cash symbols also land in the base game, and they’re the ones to watch. Six or more anywhere on the reels triggers the Hold and Respin bonus, and Mini and Major branded cash symbols are among those that can appear. Both carry fixed values of their own, so a triggering cluster can already be holding meaningful money before the round begins.
Scatters round out the symbol set. Three of them, on reels one, three and five at once, is the free spins trigger, which makes the scatter a symbol you’re tracking across specific reels rather than counting anywhere. Reels two and four don’t carry scatters at all, so every spin is really about two of the five.
Muertos Magic Free Spins & Bonus Features
Hold and Respin
Six or more cash symbols in the base game or during free spins locks those symbols in place and clears everything else from the grid. Three free respins are awarded, and from there every cell spins as an individual reel carrying only cash symbols. No wilds, no scatters, no line wins: the round is entirely about what lands in the empty cells.
Each new cash symbol that lands locks where it falls and resets the respins back to three. That’s the whole engine of the round: fill cells, buy yourself more tries, and keep going until the respins run out or there are no empty cells left. When it ends, the sum of every cash prize on screen is paid.
The cash prizes on offer during the round:
- 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x, 6x
- 8x, 10x, 12x, 15x, 20x
- 30x and 100x the bet
- Mini jackpot symbol: 30x
- Major jackpot symbol: 100x
- Mega jackpot: 1,000x, awarded only when every cell is full
The Mega is the round’s prize worth chasing, and it demands a full grid to unlock. The ladder steps unevenly at the top: Mini and Major are worth the same as the two biggest standard cash values, while the Mega jumps tenfold beyond the Major. Filling all fifteen cells of a 5×3 grid with locked symbols is a tall order, which is exactly why the round carries the tension it does.
The maximum win is 2,500x the base bet. The biggest possible screen is fifteen top-value symbols, and the only fixed prize above them is the grid-full Mega itself.
Free Spins
Three scatters on reels one, three and five award five free spins. It’s a short round, and the reason is what happens to the reels: two, three and four merge into a single big reel spinning mega symbols, with the outer reels running normally.
Any paying symbol can arrive as a mega, and so can the scatter, wild and cash symbols. A mega symbol covers the whole merged middle of the grid, so a single mega wild or mega cash symbol lands in force across all three central reels at once. That’s also the route to the round’s biggest line wins: mega paying symbols on the middle reel combined with matching symbols on reels one and five.
A mega scatter counts as a single scatter, so retriggers still need all three positions. Landing three scatters during the round awards another five spins, and the retrigger has no limit. Five at a time is the fixed increment, so long rounds are built one retrigger at a time rather than in bulk.
The cash symbol’s presence here matters more than it first appears. Six or more cash symbols during free spins starts the Hold and Respin round from inside the bonus, so the two features can chain: a mega cash symbol covering the merged reel could contribute three of the six needed on its own.
Bonus Buy
Both bonuses can be bought directly from the base game for 50x the current total bet. The two rounds don’t price identically once you’re inside: buying the Free Spins runs at 96.09% RTP, while buying the Hold and Respin runs slightly better at 96.28%.
It’s a rare setup where the two buys are separated by a visible margin, and the respin round is the one that pays the better return for the same stake multiple.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7/10
Playing Muertos Magic is mostly a waiting game dressed in very pretty clothes: the sunlit street does its gentle work while you count cash symbols and hunt scatters on two reels out of five. The waiting is worth it for the respin round. Every locked symbol buys three more tries, so the round keeps escalating on its own, and a full grid pays the Mega on top of everything on screen.
The weakness is what sits between bonuses. The base game has no modifier, no random feature, nothing but the two triggers, and five free spins is a thin second act even with mega symbols in the middle. Medium volatility keeps the dry spells honest, but it can’t make an empty spin interesting.
This is one for players who like a build and don’t need the reels chattering at them while they wait, and who’d rather the game’s whole budget went into one round worth reaching. Anyone after constant action will find the dawn street a quiet place to stand still. For patient players, though, the party at the end is a proper one.
