Serengeti Sunrise 2: Magic Wheel Slot Review
Golden light spills over the acacia trees, dry grass runs out to flat-topped hills, and a carved wooden wheel sits built into the reel frame like it runs the place. It doesn’t. The wheel hands out the sideshows; the hold-and-respin round underneath does the paying, and that’s the argument of this game in one sentence. Mancala Gaming have painted their Serengeti by hand rather than reaching for photorealism, and the warmth of it carries the screen.
It’s a 5×4 grid with 40 paylines, high volatility, and a win ceiling of 5,000x the stake. Alongside the standard Buffalo Goes Wild 2 and Coin Fusion, Mancala also give us Clover Vault: Progressive JP, and this one sits closer to the coin-collecting end of their range than the savanna suggests. The wheel is what’s meant to set it apart.
The Reels and the Paytable
Wins pay left to right across the 40 fixed paylines, with only the highest win counted on each line and coinciding wins on different lines added together. The Lion wild substitutes for all regular symbols and lands in stacks of four, which on a four-row grid means a full reel of wilds is always in play. It also pays like the top symbol.
Below the wild, the paytable splits into four safari animals and four royals, and the gap between them is wide. Five elephants pay a thousand while five aces pay eighty, so the animal symbols carry nearly all of the line-pay value. The full ladder:
- Wild (Lion) – three pays 200.00, four 500.00, five 1000.00
- Elephant – three pays 200.00, four 500.00, five 1000.00
- Hippo – three pays 100.00, four 200.00, five 500.00
- Antelope – three pays 80.00, four 150.00, five 250.00
- Meerkat – three pays 60.00, four 80.00, five 100.00
- A – three pays 50.00, four 60.00, five 80.00
- K – three pays 40.00, four 50.00, five 60.00
- Q – three pays 30.00, four 40.00, five 50.00
- J – three pays 20.00, four 30.00, five 40.00
Those payouts correspond to the current bet, so the figures shift with the stake rather than sitting fixed. Autoplay supports both a loss limit and a win limit, and either one stops the run the moment it’s crossed. The stake itself can’t be changed mid-round, and a turbo control is there for anyone who finds the base game slow.
Special Symbols
Beyond the regular grid sit four symbols that do the real work. Coin-style special symbols carry multipliers of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 25, 50, 75 or 100. Jackpot symbols feed the prize ladder. A Collector gathers all special-symbol winnings in the base game, and in the bonus game it collects them and clears them off the grid. Finally the Magic Wheel symbol can appear anywhere and spins the wheel built into that wooden frame.
None of the four substitute into regular line wins, so they don’t interfere with the paylines above; they exist purely to drive the two features that follow. A spin can carry special symbols, a Collector and a wheel symbol at once, in which case everything resolves in its own turn.
The Magic Wheel
When the Magic Wheel symbol lands anywhere on the reels, the wheel spins. What it awards depends on where you are. In the base game it’s an instant-prize wheel: it can pay a random multiplier on the current stake, or hand over the MINI or MINOR jackpot.
The base-game multiplier ladder runs:
- 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 7x, 8x, 9x, 10x
- 20x, 30x, 40x, 50x
Inside the bonus game the wheel changes jobs. There it applies a single random multiplier to every special symbol on the grid, except jackpot symbols, with potential values of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10x. A 10x spin over a grid already carrying 100x coins is where the ceiling starts to look reachable.
The Jackpot Game
Six special and/or Jackpot symbols anywhere on the reels at once is the trigger, and it opens a hold-and-respin round with 3 respins. The triggering symbols lock in place to start. Every special and Jackpot symbol that lands after that sticks too, and each new symbol resets the respin counter back to three.
The round runs step by step. Spin; any special or Jackpot symbol that lands locks to the grid and the counter returns to three; a spin with nothing new burns one respin. That continues until the counter reaches zero on empty spins or the grid fills completely, and only then is the round totalled up.
Only special and Jackpot symbols pay in this round, so the regular animals and royals might as well not exist while it runs. A full grid of loaded coins under a good wheel multiplier is the scenario the 5,000x cap exists for.
The Jackpot Ladder
Collecting Jackpot symbols during the round grants one of the jackpots, and the count decides which:
- Five symbols – GRAND, worth 3,000x the bet
- Four symbols – MAJOR, worth 2,000x the bet
- Three symbols – MINOR, worth 1,000x the bet
- Two symbols – MINI, worth 500x the bet
That ladder is the spine of the game. The GRAND alone is more than half the 5,000x ceiling, and the MINI at 500x is a serious prize by the standards of most hold-and-respin rounds. Note the Collector’s bonus-game behaviour matters here: clearing special symbols off the grid frees space for more to land, which is what keeps a respin chain alive.
Buy Bonus
There’s no need to wait for six symbols to align. The Buy Bonus sells the Jackpot Game outright, with its three respins, for 80x the stake. That price sits below the MINI jackpot’s 500x value, though well above anything the base game’s wheel routinely hands out.
Bonus games run at the stake of the spin that triggered them, bought or otherwise, so the ladder values scale with whatever stake you carry in. A separate progression is saved for each bet amount, which means switching stakes mid-session starts the ladder count again at the new level.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.2/10
Time on this plain is mostly spent waiting. Stacked lions and the odd wheel spin keep the 40 lines ticking, but the session proper begins the moment six coins lock in and the respins start, and that round under the sunset is the one reason to pick this over the plainer coin collectors on the shelf.
The Jackpot Game earns its top billing. The Collector clearing coins mid-round keeps a chain breathing when it should have died, the wheel multiplier can land across a grid already loaded with 100x coins, and a four-tier ladder from 500x to 3,000x means even a modest round pays properly.
Everything either side of that round is thin. The animal-and-royals paytable is forgettable, and the wheel’s base-game prizes are mostly small multiples that won’t move a session. This is one for hold-and-respin players happy to sit through a quiet base game for a ladder worth climbing; anyone who wants the reels themselves to entertain will find the grass greener on another part of the plain.
