Wild West Gold Megaways Slot Review 2024

Well, it’s time once more to put on those spurs and ride into the sunset with a revolver in hand in Pragmatic Play‘s latest slot, Wild West Gold Megaways.

Readers are surely well acquainted with the smash hit that was Wild West Gold which continues to enjoy popularity to this very day. Wild West Gold had a reputation for being a little bit brutal at times, so there’s undoubtedly a few that may experience PTSD driven convulsions at the thought of a sequel, and a Megaways one at that.

Will Wild West Gold Megaways keep the essence of the original or will it make the critically acclaimed Wild West Gold a typical Megaways slot?

Let’s find out.

Wild West Gold Megaways Base Game

Wild West Gold Megaways Base Game and Features

Wild West Gold Megaways is a 6 reel slot with up to 117,649 ways to win. In order to form a wining combination, you will need to connect 3 or more of the same symbol types from left to right, starting from the left-most reel. The minimum bet available here is £/€0.20 (£/€0.25 Ante Bet) per spin and the maximum bet available is £/€100 (£/€125 Ante Bet) per spin, with plenty of options in between the two.

In terms of symbols, the highest paying regular symbol in Wild West Gold Megaways is the Sheriff with the White background, followed by 3 Cowboy and Cowgirl symbols with Green, Blue and Purple backgrounds, Money bags and Revolver. Low paying symbols are standard Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten. There is also a Wild symbol present, which substitutes for all symbols except Scatters. Each time a Wild symbol lands, it will have a random Multiplier of either x2, x3 or x5.

Wild West Gold Megaways may be an upgrade to the original, but it’s still very much lacking in any kind of exciting feature in the base game. Pragmatic Play hasn’t left us completley high and dry, with the popular Ante Bet feature making an appearance, but it’s just not enough to push this slot over the edge from the original.

Ante Bet

Before you can begin spinning, you will have the option to activate the Ante Bet feature.

Activating the Ante Bet feature will increase your current bet by 25%. Choosing to activate this feature means that you will have an increased chance at triggering the Free Spins round, and more Scatters are present on the reels.

When the Ante Bet feature is active, the Bonus Buy option is automatically deactivated. Using the Ante Bet drops the current RTP from 96.44% to 96.41%.

Wild West Gold Megaways Free Spins

Landing 3, 4, 5 or 6 Scatters in any position on the reels, triggers the Free Spins round, awarding 4x, 20x, 100x and 500x your current bet respecitvley, along with 7 Free Spins.

During the Free Spins round, each time a Wild symbol lands in view, it is given a random Multiplier of either x2, x3 or x5 and will be locked into position for the duration of Free Spins, changing size as the reels do with every Free Spin, much like Dog House Megaways.

Landing 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 Scatters above any other symbol (including Sticky Wilds), awards an additional +2, +3, +4, +5 or +6 Free Spins respectively.

Wild West Gold Megaways: Our Verdict

Big Time Gaming’s Megaways mechanic has become quite the hit with players and Providers alike, so it’s no surprise that Pragmatic Play chose to use this mechanic in their sequel, but is it to our liking?

Although Wild West Gold Megaways has been branded a Megaways title, it doesn’t really have the typical features you would usually see, like the additional Sliding Reel or Cascading feature. With these features absent, it may be enough to deter players who have an appreciation for a Megaways slot. It almost feels like Pragmatic Play has just slapped the word ‘Megaways’ onto the title and that’s that.

With this being a sequel, you would expect to see multiple changes to both gameplay and design, but this isn’t really the case here. Modern-day technology has made Wild West Gold Megaways visually more appealing, with quality graphics and crisp sound effects, but there is no signifigant changes to the theme itself, even the symbols are identical.

There are certain parts to Wild West Gold Megaways that we are happy to see remain the same, particularly the Multiplier Wilds, although we can think of a few things that would have improved these, we are just happy that Pragmatic Play didn’t downgrade this part too.

Another thing you would expect to see in a sequel slot is an even better set of statistics, but again ywe aren’t seeing that here. Wild West Gold Megaways has an above average RTP of 96.44% and a very Pragmatic Play maximum win capacity of 5,000x, which is actually lower than the original Wild West Gold!
