How Rainbow Riches Has Evolved Over the Years
Barcrest Beginnings
To understand Rainbow Riches, you first need to understand Barcrest.
Founded back in 1968, Barcrest built its name manufacturing physical fruit machines for pubs, bars, and bookmakers up and down the UK, eventually becoming one of the biggest names in the industry during its 70s-90s heyday.
The slot studio has changed hands a few times since then, almost like a game of musical chairs. International Game Technology (IGT) acquired Barcrest in 1998, before Scientific Games picked it up in 2011.
Scientific Games would go on to rebrand as Light & Wonder in 2022, and that’s who Barcrest sits under today, meaning every Rainbow Riches release – old and new – now falls under the broader Light & Wonder umbrella.
Rainbow Riches (2006)
The first-ever Rainbow Riches slot released in 2006 exclusively to brick-and-mortar casinos, pubs, and local bookmakers. It became immensely popular in UK casinos, and still is to this day.
Featuring the dapper cheeky leprechaun, later named as Lucky O’Leary (or Larry O’Leary, depending on who you ask), rolling green hills, and a rainbow arching across the reels, it introduced the bonus rounds that would go on to define the entire series: Road to Riches, Wishing Well, and Pots of Gold.

After a fairly quiet few years in the franchise, Rainbow Riches Free Spins stripped things back to basics in 2017.

Rainbow Riches Megaways (2019)
Light & Wonder used Big Time Gaming’s dynamic Megaways engine before it was trendy in Rainbow Riches Megaways. This game offers up to 117,649 ways to win and one of the largest maximum win potential in the whole series.
Staying true to Megaways slots, there are cascades to lead to consecutive wins to increase win potential, which increases tenfold in the Free Spins round. There’s an increasing multiplier that grows for each cascading win, with the multiplier applied to all wins during the feature.
Rainbow Riches Jackpot O’Luck (2020)
It seems that the gold at the end of the rainbow is a jackpot in Rainbow Riches Jackpot O’Luck, released in 2020.
