Better Wilds Slot Review
Cyan and hot pink halo rings pulse out from behind the reels, streaks of violet light tearing diagonally across a backdrop that isn’t a place at all. Better Wilds spends its entire design budget on one idea, and it isn’t the backdrop. Everything else here is a 1970s fruit machine, and that pairing of the very old and the very specific is the whole reason to give it time.
Playtech have built this one as a classic fruit-and-sevens machine dressed in modern neon, running a 5×4 grid with 25 fixed paylines and a respin mechanic built entirely around a walking wild. It sits in the same glossy, straightforward corner of the studio’s catalogue as Buffalo Blitz 2 and Fire Blaze: Jinns Moon, though it’s far simpler than either.
Base Game & Features
The symbol set is pure old-school casino: A, K, Q and J make up the low end, with Cherries, single and double Bars, a Bell and a Red 7 stacked above them. It’s a line-pays game, nothing cleverer, and wins land left to right across the 25 lines. Only the highest combination on each line counts.
Five reels and four rows gives every symbol four chances per reel to be part of a line, and with 25 lines in play the grid is busy without ever feeling crowded. Here’s what each symbol returns as a multiple of your line stake:
- Red 7: 5x for two, 25x for three, 200x for four, 500x for five
- Bell: 5x for two, 15x for three, 100x for four, 250x for five
- Purple Bar Bar: 10x for three, 75x for four, 200x for five
- Blue Bar Bar: 10x for three, 50x for four, 150x for five
- Orange Bar: 10x for three, 40x for four, 125x for five
- Cherries: 5x for three, 25x for four, 100x for five
- A and K: 5x for three, 20x for four, 75x for five
- Q and J: 5x for three, 15x for four, 50x for five
The ladder splits cleanly in two. Only the Red 7 and the Bell pay from two of a kind, which keeps the premium symbols feeling like events, while everything from the Bars down waits for three. The Bar family is graded too, with three separate tiers between the Purple Bar Bar and the plain Orange Bar, so a near-miss on the Bars is rarely a total blank.
The royals are the filler, as royals always are, but they’re not worthless: five A or K still returns a respectable multiple of the line. Note the grouping, too. A and K share a pay row, as do Q and J, which is a tidy way of saying the game considers each pair interchangeable.
The standard Wild substitutes for every symbol except the Special Wild, which is the usual arrangement and all it needs to be here. It’s the Special Wild that this game is actually about, and it gets the space to prove it.
Wins in the base game are built around filling lines the traditional way, and the Wild helps without ever taking over. A column of wilds stacked on the first reel is the picture this game wants you holding in your head while you spin. Fill the left side of a line and the right side starts to matter a great deal.
Better Wilds Bonus Features
Special Wilds
The Special Wild appears on reels three, four or five only. When it lands, it locks in place and awards a respin. On each respin it walks one position to the left, and it keeps respinning and walking until it has moved off the reels entirely.
Expansion comes later in the run. From its second move onwards, the Special Wild also grows by one position, either up or down. So what starts as a single stacked symbol ends its run as a two-position wild crawling across the grid, and every respin it survives is another spin where a growing wild is sitting somewhere on the reels.
A single run plays out like this:
- The Special Wild lands on reel three, four or five and locks in place.
- The first respin fires, and the wild shifts one position to the left.
- On the second and every later move, it grows to cover the position above or below as well, standing two positions tall instead of one.
- The respins continue on that pattern, the wild moving left and staying expanded, until it crosses the final reel and drops off the left edge.
Because the wild walks leftwards across a left-to-right payline game, the interesting part of a run is where it ends up. Sitting on the left-hand reels, an expanded wild is in position to complete lines that start there, which is what the later respins of a run are really for.
Additional Special Wilds
Land a second Special Wild while the first is still walking and you get additional respins, one for each new arrival. Each new wild follows the same rules: it walks left on every respin and grows from its second move onwards.
Multiple walking wilds on the grid at once is where this game produces its biggest moments, because the respins don’t stop until every Special Wild has exited. The last wild standing keeps the whole chain alive on its own, which is why the tail end of a run matters more than its start.
That’s the whole feature programme. There’s no free spins round, no scatter, no pick’em, nothing else to trigger. Better Wilds is one mechanic done properly, and everything the game pays flows through either the standard paytable or that walking wild.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.1/10
Playing Better Wilds is mostly waiting for one symbol, and the game is honest about that from the first spin. The neon backdrop carries the mood while you wait, and when a Special Wild finally struts across the grid it’s a better show than any of the fruit around it. That single mechanic is the reason to pick this up, and happily it’s a good one.
The walking wild is genuinely well made. It expands late in its run, so the respins get stronger rather than weaker, and overlapping wilds can keep a chain alive long after a normal respin feature would have packed up. That’s craft, not padding.
The weakness is thinness. Once you’ve seen one full run you’ve seen everything the game knows how to do, and there’s no second feature waiting for the patient. This one belongs to players who love a classic cabinet and one strong trick, not to anyone shopping for a bonus round catalogue. For the right person, those rings will glow a long while.
