Grand Junction Mountain Express Slot Review
Snow-capped peaks crowd in from both sides of the screen, pine forest darkening the slopes, and a meadow scattered with wildflowers rolls out beneath reels framed like a gilded station panel. Grand Junction Mountain Express paints its alpine railway with more care than the genre usually gets, and that care is needed, because the base game beneath the scenery is plain spinning where almost everything interesting has been pushed into a two-stage bonus that takes patience to reach.
Underneath, it’s a traditional build from Playtech: a 5×3 grid, 50 paylines, an RTP of 96.51%, and a two-stage bonus carrying a ladder worth up to 2000x the total bet. It runs on a simpler engine than Buffalo Blitz, Fire Blaze: Jinns Moon or Stallion Strike, but the mountain line has more scenery than any of them, and the climb to the Grand prize is a steep one.
Base Game and Paytable
The game runs on 50 fixed lines, and the total bet works out at 10x the coin value. Line wins form on adjacent reels from the leftmost reel onwards, only the highest combination on each payline pays, and wins on different paylines accumulate. Line wins are multiplied by your coin value, while scatter wins are multiplied by the total bet and can form from symbols in any position.
The Locomotive wild stands for every symbol except the Tunnel scatter and the Grand Junction symbol. The paytable, per symbol:
- Train Driver: 2x, 10x or 40x the coin value for three, four or five
- Gauge/Valve (Mountain Express): 2x, 5x or 25x
- Suitcase: 1x, 4x or 20x
- Money (All Aboard): 1x, 3x or 15x
- A, K, Q, J, 10, 9: 1x, 2x or 10x
- Locomotive wild: 2x, 10x or 40x
- Tunnel scatter: 1x, 10x or 50x the total bet, from any position
The Train Driver and the Locomotive wild pay identically at the top of the table, so the wild isn’t just a gap-filler here, it’s also the joint-richest symbol on the reels. The five card symbols all share a single pay row, which tells you most of what the low-end wins look like.
A jackpot ticker sits above the reels throughout, showing the four rungs of the ladder: Mini, Minor, Major and Grand. Those credit figures move with your stake, so it’s the multiples that matter, and they’re paid through the Bonus Game rather than landed directly on the reels.
The base game itself is straightforward spinning. Card symbols and the themed picture symbols do the paying, the wild fills gaps, and the Tunnel and Grand Junction symbols don’t pay line wins at all, they only trigger the features.
Turbo mode and autoplay are both on the toolbar, with autoplay offering an until-feature option that stops the moment a bonus lands. Beyond that, there’s nothing in the base game you haven’t seen before.
Free Games Feature
Three or more Tunnel scatter symbols landing anywhere on the reels trigger the Free Games Feature and award 11 free games. The reels spin automatically, and the round plays out at the same bet as the triggering spin.
During the free games, Locomotive and Train Driver symbols may land stacked, which is where the round’s winning potential comes from. With both of those sitting at the top of the paytable, a full stack across the right reels is the round’s best-case line win.
Any three or more Tunnel symbols during the round award a further 11 free games, with no stated limit on retriggers. The Grand Junction Feature can also be triggered inside the free games, so the round can escalate into the game’s bigger bonus while it runs. That cross-trigger is the one wrinkle in an otherwise familiar free-spins setup.
Grand Junction Feature
Five Grand Junction symbols landing simultaneously anywhere on the reels trigger the Grand Junction Feature. It runs in two stages: a Hold and Spin Bonus first, then a Bonus Game if enough Train symbols are collected along the way. Three or more Trains gathered in stage one is what advances play to stage two.
Hold and Spin Bonus
The Hold and Spin Bonus awards 9 free spins. Every Coin symbol that lands is held in place for the remaining spins, and so is every Train symbol. Coin prizes are worth 1x, 2x, 3x or 5x the total bet each, which are modest figures individually, but they accumulate across the round.
The Conductor symbol awards an additional 3 spins whenever it lands, though Conductors aren’t held themselves. At the end of the spins, all Coin prizes are added to the total win, and if three or more Train symbols have been collected, play moves on to the Bonus Game.
Bonus Game
The number of Trains collected decides which prize game you get: 3, 4, 5 or 6 Trains award the Mini, Minor, Major or Grand Bonus Game respectively. One free spin is awarded, and each of the five reels reveals a number of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or a Train symbol. Each Train then animates to reveal an 8, 9 or 10.
Adding the five numbers together gives a score, and the meter above the reels converts that score into the prize. The tiers step as follows:
- Grand: 130x total bet from 36 points, 300x from 37, 600x from 40, up to a maximum of 2000x from 44
- Major: 50x from 0, 75x from 33, 125x from 41, up to a maximum of 500x from 46
- Minor: 25x from 0, 45x from 32, up to a maximum of 100x from 42
- Mini: 10x from 0, up to a maximum of 20x from 31
The scoring gives the round a small push-your-luck flavour, since Trains revealing the top numbers are what lift a score into the higher bands. The Grand’s lower band of 130x sits a long way above the Major’s 500x ceiling, so the jump between tiers is steep rather than gradual.
The 2000x Grand prize is the biggest number the game commits to. The overall win cap sits in the terms and conditions, so there’s no single published maximum-win figure to quote.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.1/10
This is a long, gentle ride with one big stop at the end. You board for the two-stage bonus: the free games stack the two richest symbols, the Hold and Spin round builds coin by coin, and the score-meter finish is a better climax than a wheel spin. Most of the journey between bonuses is card symbols ticking over, and the painted mountain line is genuinely pleasant company while it happens.
The Bonus Game is the best thing about it, because the tier you reach is earned through what you collected rather than drawn at random. The weakness is the wait. Five Grand Junction symbols is a tall order from a plain base game, and the lower rungs of the ladder don’t pay much once you get there.
It’s a good fit for anyone who enjoys a collect-and-climb bonus and doesn’t mind a quiet ride to reach it, and the scenery makes the quiet stretches easier. Anyone after frequent features or fast action will find this train runs to its own timetable.
