Gremlins After Midnight Slot Review
Every mogwai comes with three rules: keep it out of bright light, don’t get it wet, and never, ever feed it after midnight. Light & Wonder break the third with relish in Gremlins After Midnight, and the chaos that follows powers the entire game. It’s a 5×3 grid with 20 fixed paylines, carrying a 96% RTP in its default configuration, with 94% and 90% variants available to operators. Volatility is officially Medium-High, though it plays a touch softer than that in practice, and stakes run from 0.20 to 100 per spin.
Gizmo doesn’t just stand beside the reels looking cute: he drops Fuzz Balls onto them and hands out the Box symbols that sweep up the values.
Billy and Kate appear across the paytable, and the Chicken Buckets nod to the midnight feeding that caused all the trouble in the first place. Nothing here is a logo bolted on for decoration.
Underneath the branding, this is a Light & Wonder cash-collector in the lineage of Huff N’ More Puff, built on hold-and-respin foundations the studio has spent years refining.
In play, it sits closest to Huff N’ Puff Money Mansion and the Money Link series, with one meaningful twist: the Chicken Buckets split progression into three colour-coded upgrade routes. Whether that’s enough chaos to freshen up a very familiar format is the question this review sets out to answer.
Base Game & Features
The base game runs on five reels, three rows and 20 fixed paylines, with the film’s characters leading the paytable:
- Gizmo: the top-paying symbol
- Billy, Kate, Glasses, the Clock and the Car: the mid-tier premiums
- Ace, King, Queen and Jack: the royals at the bottom
Pacing sits on the steady side. Ordinary symbol wins can go quiet for stretches, but the Mystery reveals and the Chicken Bucket drops give nearly every spin something extra to watch.

Mystery Stacked Reels
Before every spin, all Mystery Symbol positions flip to reveal a single matching symbol, anywhere from Gizmo down to the Jack. The reveal happens before pays are evaluated, so a full stack can turn into a block of premium symbols across several reels at once.
A reveal can also produce a Mystery Chicken Bucket sitting on top of the replaced symbol, and that’s where the feature machinery really starts.
Mystery Chicken Buckets
Buckets come in three colours, and each feeds a different meter above the reels:
- Orange Chicken Bucket: fills the More Money meter
- Purple Chicken Bucket: fills the Jackpot meter
- Green Chicken Bucket: fills the Expanded Reels meter
Any combination of bucket colours landing on the reels triggers the Hold & Spin Feature, which makes the meters less a decoration and more a running progress bar towards the bonus.
Scatter Fuzz Ball
A Fuzz Ball can land naturally on any reel, carrying a cash value between 2.50 and 7.50. When one lands and the Instant Win Feature isn’t awarded, Gizmo may add between two and five extra Fuzz Balls to random positions, and those carry heftier values from 7.50 up to 50.00.
Instant Win Feature
Any naturally landed Fuzz Ball can award the Instant Win Feature, which may hit once per wagered game. Gizmo adds between one and three Box symbols, and each Box collects the value of every Fuzz Ball on the reels and pays out the total.
Multiple Boxes don’t simply repeat the job: each one collects in sequence, stacking its sums on top of whatever the earlier Boxes gathered.
Turbo Mode
Turbo Mode speeds each spin up and switches itself off automatically during features. The off button can be restricted until a wagered game completes, and the mode has no influence on results.
Bonus Features
Everything in the base game funnels towards a single destination: the Hold & Spin Feature. It’s the only bonus round here, but the three bucket colours mean the upgrades arriving inside it can change the shape of every visit.
Hold & Spin Feature
The feature opens with three spins and three Fuzz Balls already placed on the reels, all held in position for the duration. Every new Fuzz Ball that lands resets the counter back to three, and a Mystery Chicken Bucket that activates one of the sub-features resets it as well.
The round ends when the spins run out or every position fills. Before each spin, Mystery Chicken Bucket positions may be randomly replaced with Orange, Purple or Green buckets, and collecting one into its meter during the round activates the matching upgrade. Naturally landing Fuzz Balls can also trigger the Instant Win Feature here, with Gizmo adding Boxes but no extra Fuzz Balls.

More Money Feature
Orange Buckets feed the More Money Feature. Once it’s active, any Orange Chicken Bucket that lands can increase existing Fuzz Ball values by a random amount between 5.00 and 50.00, lifting the totals the round pays out when it ends.
Jackpot Feature
Purple Buckets feed the Jackpot Feature. When it triggers, every Purple Chicken Bucket on the reels is replaced with a Jackpot Chicken Bucket displaying one of four tiers: Mini, Minor, Major or Grand. Landing one resets the remaining spins to three and awards the value shown on the matching jackpot meter.

Expanded Reels Feature
Green Buckets feed the Expanded Reels Feature, which doubles the reel array from three rows to six using an alternate set of reels. The extra space matters: Fuzz Ball values on the expanded set match naturally landed base game values, so the bigger grid means more room for cash symbols and feature interactions. Green Buckets stop appearing while the feature is active.

Buy Pass
The Buy Pass skips the wait entirely. It costs a flat 250x your current stake, can only be activated during the base game, and awards one of the three sub-features, or a combination of them, selected at random.
- More Money Feature: upgrades existing Fuzz Ball values
- Jackpot Feature: swaps Purple Buckets for the four jackpot tiers
- Expanded Reels Feature: grows the grid from three rows to six
- Any combination of the three, decided at random
There’s no choosing which upgrade you receive, and that randomness is the trade-off for the instant entry.

Our Honest Verdict
The base game does its job without fireworks. Ordinary wins went quiet for stretches, but the Mystery reveals and the three bucket meters kept every spin attached to something.
Hold & Spin was where it earned its keep. Our natural trigger looked ready to die on the opening exchanges until a Fuzz Ball reset the counter, and from there the round kept breathing. The Box collect, stacking one collection on top of another, proved far more powerful than it first looks.
Expanded Reels was the moment everything clicked: the grid doubling to six rows mid-feature, with the spin counter nearly spent, was when the bonus genuinely felt alive. The Jackpot tiers never showed up for us.
For Hold & Spin fans and Gremlins devotees this is an easy recommendation, and the licence does real mechanical work here. If you’re already tired of Hold & Spin games, or a Buy Pass that picks your feature at random sounds like a gamble too far, it won’t convert you.
We never landed the round where all three upgrades combine, which is exactly why we’d go back and feed it after midnight.
