Mutant Trawlers Slot Review
The contaminated harbour is the whole point here, and Mutant Trawlers is smarter than it looks because the toxicity isn’t just a coat of paint: the fish themselves are the money, carrying cash values on their symbols while the water glows around them. Most fishing slots hide the prizes behind a bonus round you wait for. This one puts the catch on the grid and pays you for hauling it twice.
It’s a BangBang build, running on a 5×3 grid with 243 ways to win, medium-high volatility, and a 94% RTP with a hit frequency of 27.7%. Stakes run from 0.20 to 40 per spin. If the setting appeals, Pulled From The Deep UltraNudge and Caribbean Catch UltraNudge cover similar water with a straighter face, and BangBang’s wider catalogue runs from Fire Dudes to The Runemakers DoubleMax. This one wants to be judged on its features rather than a poster number.
Base Game & Features
The reels sit over a poisoned harbour, rusted trawlers chugging past in the background while mutant fish drift through the symbols. The cartoon style is broad and slightly gross in a way that suits the premise, and the fish aren’t just decoration: several of them carry cash values directly on their symbols.
Wins pay across 243 ways, so any left-to-right combination of matching symbols on adjacent reels counts, with only the highest combination per way paying. With three rows per reel, that’s the standard ways setup rather than something bespoke. A wild appears on the reels and substitutes for the paying symbols.
There’s also a BOOM symbol that shows up repeatedly, tied into the feature work below rather than paying on its own. Between the modifiers, the wild, and the cash-value fish, the symbol set is busier than the average fishing slot:
- Mutant Fish (purple/blue eyeball fish) – the top payer, 2.5x stake for three
- Small Mutant Fish (round eyeball creature) – 0.7x stake for three
- Mutant Fish (lower tier) – 0.5x stake for three
- Small Mutant Fish (lower tier) – 0.25x stake for three
- A, K, Q, J – the royals, paying the smallest tier
- Wild – substitutes for the paying symbols
- BOOM symbol – no pay of its own, feeds the feature work
- Cash-value fish – display a cash amount on the symbol itself
The fish also pay in credits at the quoted stake, and the two views of the same ladder are worth seeing side by side:
- Mutant Fish (purple/blue eyeball fish) – 5.00 for three
- Small Mutant Fish (round eyeball creature) – 1.40 for three
- Mutant Fish (lower tier) – 1.00 for three
- Small Mutant Fish (lower tier) – 0.50 for three
Read the two lists together and the shape of the pays is clear. Three of the top fish at the maximum stake returns 5.00 in credits, which is 2.5x the spin cost, and the lower tiers step down in even intervals from there. The royals sit below everything the fish offer, which tells you where the game wants your attention: on the water, not the card suits.
Mutant Cash
Mutant Cash is the first of the two base-game modifiers, and it lurks in the toxic water between regular spins. When it lands, the cash amounts printed on the fish get swept up and paid out on top of any ways wins from the same spin. The fish keep their paytable job as well, so a single symbol can contribute twice.
That’s the whole shape of the base game: small ways wins keeping the balance ticking, with the collect drops providing the spikes. It also means the grid is never quite idle, because every cash-value fish on screen is a potential collect waiting for the modifier to arrive.
Trawler Respins
Trawler Respins is the multiplier builder. When it triggers, the respins run and the multipliers stack as they go. Two boats work the water during these rounds, hauling whatever the contaminated sea throws up, and the multipliers they build are where the bigger base-game money sits.
The BOOM symbol feeds into this side of the game. It doesn’t pay on its own; instead, it’s part of what drives the respin frames, and its repeated appearance across the reels is the tell that the trawlers are about to go out. Between them, the two modifiers cover the base game’s whole personality:
- Mutant Cash – a collect modifier; picks up the cash values shown on the fish symbols
- Trawler Respins – a respin sequence that stacks multipliers as it runs
- BOOM symbol – the driver symbol, tied into the respin work rather than the paytable
- Wild – substitutes for paying symbols in the usual way
Mutant Trawlers Bonus Features
Fishing Boat Frenzy & Meltdown Free Spins
The headline round is the Meltdown Free Spins, which is exactly what it sounds like: the reactor goes, the water gets worse, and the free spins run. Inside the round, the Fishing Boat Frenzy takes over, with the trawlers working the contaminated catch for boosted pays.
The round isn’t a separate mode bolted on. It’s the base game’s two systems run together: the cash-carrying fish are still on the grid, the trawler multipliers still stack, and the BOOM symbol still has its job. What changes is the pace and the pay weighting, with the frenzy boats pulling the bigger results.
That design choice carries the review’s verdict on the game more than any single number. Everything you meet in the first fifty spins is the same machinery you meet in the bonus, just turned up. Whether that’s a strength depends on how much you liked the base game to begin with, and the free spins are where it pays to find out.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7/10
Playing Mutant Trawlers is fishing in water nobody should fish, and that’s precisely its pull: every spin drags something wrong up from the deep, and half the time it’s worth money. You’d choose it for that atmosphere more than for the maths, though the maths does set a clear ceiling: the maximum win is 2,793x the stake.
The best thing BangBang did here was make the bonus feel like the base game with the reactor opened. Meltdown Free Spins doesn’t swap in new rules; it just pays the same contaminated catch harder, so nothing you learn early is wasted. The sting is the RTP: 94% is a lean take on a 243-ways grid whose paytable is already modest at the top, and the royals below the fish are filler.
For players who like their fishing slots with a bit of body horror and don’t measure a game by its return figure, this is a good catch. Players who want a gentler boat and a fatter paytable have calmer water elsewhere in the catalogue.
