Nunchucks Slot Review
A nun in a blue habit leans on a rooftop ledge at dusk, smoking, a city skyline behind her, while a second nun in dark purple kicks clean through the comic panel beside her. That’s Nunchucks in one image: a gothic convent drawn as a comic book, all saturated purple and teal, where the martial arts are the point. NetEnt has built something genuinely odd here, and it holds together. It runs on a 6×4 grid with up to 4,096 bet ways, a 96.21% RTP, a 12,000x maximum win and bets from 0.2 to 40 per spin, and its 28% hit rate tells you how it pays: rarely, and big when it does.
It sits near Dead or Alive 2 and Starburst Galaxy in the NetEnt catalogue, but tonally it’s out on its own.
Base Game and Bet Ways
Wins follow the classic bet-ways pattern: matching symbols on three or more adjacent reels from the left, no gaps. Up to 4,096 bet ways are in play on the 6×4 grid, and extra copies of a symbol on the winning reels multiply the ways for that win.
Only the longest combination per symbol pays. Simultaneous wins on different ways add together.
Wilds substitute for everything except Bonus, Super Bonus and Nun symbols, and always pay the best combination available. A wild can sit on top of a Nun symbol without blocking its feature. Wilds are also joint-top of the paytable, level with the Offering Box.
All symbol values are multiples of the total bet. The Nunchucks symbol itself is oddly cheap for a title symbol; the Offering Box is the richest regular payer.
- Offering Box: 1x, 2x, 4x, 6x for three to six
- Cross: 0.5x, 1x, 2.5x, 5x
- Nunchucks: 0.4x, 0.75x, 1.5x, 4x
- Grenade: 0.4x, 0.75x, 1.5x, 3x
- Star/Shuriken: 0.2x, 0.4x, 0.75x, 2.5x
- A and K: 0.15x, 0.3x, 1.5x, 3.75x
- Q, J and 10: 0.1x, 0.25x, 1x, 2.5x
- Wild: 6x for six
A single game round, main game included, is capped at 12,000x the bet. The round ends the moment that limit is hit. Hit frequency is 28%, so most spins are blanks with the bet ways doing the work when something does land.
The Nun Features
Nun symbols are the engine of the game. Whenever one lands, in the main game or in either spins round, it activates its matching feature and may trigger a Re-Spin. Several can fire in the same round, each in sequence, and their effects combine. There are four.
Colossal Nun
The Colossal Nun drops a Colossal Mystery Symbol covering anywhere from a 2×2 to a 4×4 block of the grid. It then transforms into a single regular paying symbol, filling every cell it covers. If it overlaps a Wild Reel, it becomes a Giant Wild instead.
Wild Reel Nun
This one converts the entire reel it lands on into wilds. Extra Wild Reel Nuns convert their own reels in the same way, and a Wild Reel crossing a Colossal Mystery Symbol upgrades that block into a Giant Wild.
Multiplier Nun
The Multiplier Nun attaches multipliers to one or more reels. When a win runs through reels carrying multipliers, those values are added together and applied to the win, and every active reel multiplier counts.
A Colossal Mystery Symbol spanning several multiplied reels picks up the sum of all of them. Additional Multiplier Nuns stack further multipliers onto the reels.
Upgrade Nun
The Upgrade Nun doesn’t start anything new. It makes what’s already active stronger: enlarging the Colossal block, doubling active multipliers, or generating one to three extra Wild Reels where reels are still available.
Re-Spins
When a Nun symbol lands, a Re-Spin sequence can follow. Before it begins, every landed Nun activates its feature, and those features stay live for the whole sequence. More Nuns can arrive on the Re-Spins themselves, adding features mid-sequence even when overlapped by wilds, and the Upgrade Nun can show up too.
Wins are evaluated after each individual Re-Spin, and the sequence only ends when a spin awards no further Re-Spins, after which the game carries on in whatever mode it was in, whether that’s the main game or a spins round.
Bonus Spins and Super Bonus Spins
Bonus symbols land anywhere. Three, four, five or six of them award 8, 10, 12 or 14 Bonus Spins respectively. If any of the landed symbols is a Super Bonus, you get Super Bonus Spins instead, and the difference between the two rounds is the whole point of the game’s bonus structure.
In ordinary Bonus Spins, Nuns appear and trigger Re-Spins exactly as in the main game, but every activated feature resets at the end of each spin. You build, you lose it, you build again.
Super Bonus Spins keep every activated feature live until the round finishes, with additional Nuns and the Upgrade Nun able to keep stacking on top throughout, and a reset coming only once the feature ends. Both rounds play at the bet of the triggering spin, their total win is added to that round’s wins, and the game then returns to the round that started it.
The Elevate Feature
Elevate is the buy menu, one option per game round, and the pricing is unusually wide. At the bottom end it’s a nudge; at the top it’s a serious commitment.
- Bonus Hunt – 3x the bet, increases the chance of special features triggering
- Guaranteed Nun – 25x the bet, at least one Nun symbol is guaranteed to land, opening the door to Re-Spins
- Bonus Spins – 100x the bet, three or more Bonus symbols land and trigger Bonus Spins, with Super Bonus Spins possible
- Super Bonus Spins – 300x the bet, at least three Bonus symbols including one Super Bonus land, and the round also contains at least one Nun symbol
- Super Nun Spin – 500x the bet, at least one Nun is guaranteed while the chances of Bonus Spins and Super Bonus Spins are greatly increased
Running Bonus Hunt drops the return slightly, to 96.05%. The Elevate options are the only route to a guaranteed Super Bonus round, which is worth knowing when the reels are being stingy with Super Bonus symbols.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.7/10
Playing Nunchucks is mostly waiting, and the waiting is the point. You spin, mostly nothing lands, and then a chain of Nuns arrives and the whole rooftop lights up at once. Nobody chooses this game for its base game; they choose it for that one sequence where a Colossal block, two wild reels and stacked multipliers all pay into the same spin.
The Super Bonus round is where it pays best, because features persist and keep stacking for the whole feature. Reaching it under your own steam is a long shot, though, and ordinary Bonus Spins reset everything after each spin, so they rarely build anything worth the wait.
It’s for players who like a long build and can sit through a quiet stretch without reaching for the Elevate button in frustration. Anyone chasing frequent wins will find it mean. But the comic-convent styling carries the droughts better than most, and when the nuns finally start kicking, it’s a lot of fun.
