Book of Toro Slot Review 2021

Book of Toro from Elk Studios reintroduces us our loveable, recognisable and masculine Bull Toro yet again in a very different way.

Wild Toro was one of Elk Studios’ most successful slots of all time, and they’ve since expanded on the series with Wild Toro II. If you’re familiar with both Book style slots and Wild Toro games then you’ll agree that the two couldn’t function more differently.

How has Toro been adapted for Book Style gameplay? or has Book Style gameplay been adapted for Toro?

Lets enter the tombs with Toro to find out.

Book of Toro Base Game

Book of Toro Theme

When you think about the past you might assume that Book of Toro is Spanish through and through, but it looks as if Toro has adopted the Egyptian Culture instead.

The matador is back yet again, but this time he’s in explorer clobber instead of his usual attire and the rest of the design is pretty much what you’d expect from an Egyptian style slot with tombs, and Ancient Egyptian Treasure. The music for Book of Toro is as Egyptian as you’d expect too, but every so often Toro and his seductive tone will chime in to whisper sweet nothings to Maria yet again.

Overall, The Book of Toro Theme definitely isn’t what we expected it to be, though we’re not quite sure if we’d have preferred a more Spanish vibe given the overwhelming presence of Egyptian style slots in the industry already.

Book of Toro Betting and Symbols

Book of Toro has a variety of betting options for players to choose from. For players who prefer a lower stake, the minimum bet available is £0.20 per spin. For players who prefer a higher stake, the maximum bet available is £100 per spin, with plenty of other options in between the two.

The highest paying regular symbol in Book of Toro is the Matador, followed by the Eye of Horus, Horus and the Scarab Beetle. Lower paying symbols are standard Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten.

The Wild and Wild Book symbols substitute for all symbols except the Mummy, Toro and other Wild symbols.

Book of Toro Base Game and Features

Book of Toro is a 5 reel slot with 10 fixed paylines. To form a win you will need to connect 3 or more (or 2 or more of the higher paying symbols) from left to right, starting from the left-most reel.

The base game in Book of Toro is a little boring to say the least with only the music to keep you entertained, luckily for us Toro can’t seem to control himself even in Egypt and let’s loose on the Mummies with the Toro Goes Wild Feature! ELK Studios has also thrown in a Mummy Respin Feature so there is plenty to keep you occupied.

Mummy Respin Feature

During gameplay, if you land 2 or more Mummies on any of the reels it will trigger the Mummy Respin Feature.

The Mummy symbols will lock into their current position and will remain sticky for the duration of the Respin.

Any additional Mummy symbols that land in view may prolong the Mummy Respins.

All Mummy respins will end when Toro appears on the screen.

If a Toro symbol comes in to play whilst Mummy symbols are present on the reels or vice versa, the Toro Goes Wild Feature will activate.

Book of Toro Mummy Respins

Toro Goes Wild Feature

Toro is a Walking Wild that awards Respins as he moves.

During the Toro Goes Wild feature, Toro moves both vertically and horizontally to knock off all the Mummy symbols on the reels, leaving Wild symbols behind.

Toro will start by attacking any Mummy symbols that are on the same reel, he will then attack to the left as long as there are additional Mummy symbols. Toro will finish off by attacking all Mummy symbols on the right.

Only one Toro will be actively attacking Mummies at any one time, he will remain active until he leaves the screen, even though there may be more than one Toro on the screen.

Toro will continue to unleash havoc until all Mummy symbols are defeated.

Book of Toro Free Spins

In order to claim Free Spins, you will need to land 3, 4 or 5 Book symbols on any of the reels to be awarded 10, 15 and 20 Free Spins.

In sticking with the classic ‘Book’ tradition, a random symbol will be awarded for expansion. Higher-paying symbols only require two symbols for expansion whereas lower-paying symbols require three.

Toro will substitute for one expanding symbol as long as there is one expanding symbol present on another reel. Free Spins are put on hold if a Toro symbol appears or if the Mummy Respins feature is triggered. Free Spins will reactivate when the last Toro leaves the screen and all Mummy Respins are complete.

Landing 3 or more Book symbols during the bonus round will award additional Free Spins, and an extra expanding symbol will be selected.

Up to 3 expanding symbols can be triggered, any retriggers after this will only award additional Free Spins. The number of Free Spins awarded on a retrigger is determined by the initial Free Spins trigger. The bonus round will end when there are no more Free Spins remaining or if the Max win of 10,000x is reached.

X-iter Feature

Elk Studios has once again included their X-iter Feature for players outside of the UK.

The X-iter Feature is a great option for Elk Studios fans, but because it includes Bonus Buys it sadly does not feature in UK markets. This Feature basically allows players to buy their way into not just the bonus, but features of the game and super bonuses too.

  • Mummy Respin – 1 Spin with Guaranteed Mummy Respin at the cost of 5x your bet
  • Toro – 1 Spin with a Guaranteed Toro at the cost of 25x your bet
  • Mini Bonus – 3 Spins with a randomly selected expansion symbol applicable for the Scatter Pay Feature at the cost of 50x your bet
  • Bonus – Guarantees a game round with entry into Free Spins at the cost of 100x your bet
  • Super Bonus – Guarantees a game round with entry into the Super Free Spins at the cost of 500x your bet. All book symbols in this mode are sticky and the expansion of symbols are sticky as long as at least on additional symbol lands in view or until there is at least one expansion symbol on each reel.

The RTP for each of the X-iter Feature stands at 95%.

Book of Toro Our Verdict

These days, Book Games need to do something a little bit different if they’re to stand out against a swathe of slots just like it, and Book of Toro definitely does.

It stays true to slots before it with features seen in previous slots like Walking Wilds and respins, and it adds a new spin in the form of Book Style Gameplay too. However, Book of Toro fails to stand out as the very best Book Style Game in our opinion.

You may well prefer the classics like Book of Dead and Legacy of Dead, but if you love a bit of innovation then Book of Duat from Quickspin, Book of Destiny from Print Studios and Book of Shadows from Nolimit City still stands out as the best. Looking to the statistics, win potential is brilliant with 10,000x capabilities, but RTP is a little bit on the low side at 95%.

Another thing that strikes us is the X-iter Feature. There’s no doubt that this is a great feature, but for UK players its entirely out of reach. Book of Shadows has no Super Bonus Feature, and if Nolimit City do include a Super Bonus they generally include a way for players to get there via extra scatter symbols.

Sadly, the super bonus for Book of Toro is completely out of reach for UK players. This is a trend we’ve seen in more than one slots to include the X-iter Feature, and unfortunately it really does make ELK Studios slots less attractive to UK Players
