More Unusual Suspects Slot Review
More Unusual Suspects plays out on a rooftop high above a purple-lit skyline, a chunky grey safe crouched beside the reels under a row of red spotlights, office towers fading into low cloud behind the grid. Nearly every spin on this rooftop produces something that isn’t a win yet: wilds leave frames behind, those frames grow multipliers they can’t use, and the money only shows up when a Detective lands and turns the whole collection loose at once. Northern Lights Gaming has made this heist series a habit, and this entry is the most patient of the lot.
It’s a 5×4 grid with 20 paylines, medium volatility, a hit rate of 35.34% and a 96.06% RTP, which ticks up to 96.10% if you use the Buy Feature or the Gamble. Series stablemates Wanted Unusual Suspects and Unusual Suspects Cartel Cash run the same beat from different angles. The ceiling here is whatever the trail and the vaults can assemble.
Base Game & Features
Wins pay left to right across adjacent reels, and only the highest combination counts on each line. The symbol values are modest, multiples of your stake, with the royals barely registering:
- Gold Bars / Cash Case: 1x for three, 2.5x for four, 10x for five
- Dynamite / Red Case: 0.5x, 1x, 5x
- Gun: 0.2x, 0.5x, 3x
- A, J, 10: 0.1x for three, 0.3x for four
Bets run from 0.20 to 15.00 per spin. The wild substitutes for everything except the Scatter and Detective symbols, and a Golden Wild spawns extra wilds, as many as eight, or another Golden Wild in its place. Multiple winning combinations on a single spin are summed together, and the win over value shown after a bonus is the cumulative total of an entire Free Spins session rather than any single spin.
Wild Sticky Frames
Every wild that lands leaves behind a x1 Sticky Frame at that position. Each further wild landing in a frame pushes its multiplier up, to a maximum of x5. The multipliers only come into play during the Detective Wild bonus, so the frames are storage until then.
Detective Wild Bonus
Land the Detective symbol and he populates every Sticky Frame on the reels with wilds. Any multiplier sitting on a winline applies to that winline’s wins during the bonus. In the base game the frames are cleared once the bonus finishes. In Free Spins they stay put until the round ends.
Bonus Perk Bar & Nudging Scatter Respin
Scatters land on any reel in the base game, pay nothing themselves and can’t be substituted by wilds. Land 2 Scatters on the top three rows and the Nudging Scatter Respin kicks in: reels carrying a Scatter are held and nudge down one row while the rest respin.
Each respin that ends with 2 Scatters still on the reels adds a token to the Bonus Perk Bar. The feature runs until a Scatter reaches the bottom row or 5 Scatters land, and 3 or more Scatters during it triggers Free Spins. Fill the bar and you get an extra perk pick on entry. Bar progress is saved per bet and resets once used.
Vault Jackpot Bonus
Symbols can land carrying a Gold Bar overlay. Collecting them can randomly trigger the Vault Jackpot bonus, in the base game and in Free Spins alike. Twelve vaults appear, each hiding a GRAND, MAJOR, MINOR or MINI prize, and you pick until you reveal 3 matching jackpots to win that one. Only a single jackpot can be awarded per trigger, and collected Gold Bars are saved per bet.
Gamble
The Gamble button offers a shot at triggering Free Spins directly, and you can adjust the odds of a gamble win up or down before committing. A successful gamble starts the round at your current bet. The feature runs at 96.10% RTP, marginally above the standard game.
More Unusual Suspects Free Spins & Bonus Rounds
3, 4 or 5 Scatters anywhere on the reels trigger Big Boss Free Spins:
- 3 Scatters: 10 free spins
- 4 Scatters: 15 free spins
- 5 Scatters: 20 free spins
The round plays out automatically at the bet that triggered it. During the round, every Detective symbol that lands highlights one position up the Bonus Trail. If Sticky Frames are on the reels, the Detective also triggers the Detective Wild bonus, and this time the frames survive to the end of the round. Reaching a Big Boss position awards 5 extra spins with a multiplier, stepping up through x2, x3, x5 and x10 for each Big Boss on the trail. The trail resets when the round finishes.
Bonus Perk Pick
Triggering Free Spins opens a lineup of suspects, and you pick them one at a time to reveal perks before the spins start:
- Boost Perk: unlocks the first Big Boss on the trail and awards 5 extra spins with a x2 multiplier
- +2 Spins Perk: start with 2 extra spins
- +Frames Perk: adds a random selection of frames to the reels
- +Wilds Perk: more wild symbols during the round
- +Detective Perk: more Detective symbols during the round
- No Perk: ends the pick
Up to 5 perks can be revealed, and a filled Bonus Perk Bar grants one extra pick on top. The Boost Perk is the one worth hoping for, since it puts the first Big Boss within reach from spin one rather than leaving the trail to chance.
Getaway Spin
After the last free spin there’s a chance of one Getaway Spin, a continuation of the round in which a Detective symbol is guaranteed to land. It doesn’t advance the trail, but with frames still on the board it’s one more collection.
Buy Feature
Pressing BUY triggers the Free Spins feature instantly, at the price displayed for your current bet, and the round plays out at that bet. Purchased rounds run at 96.10% RTP.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.2/10
You spend most of a session on this rooftop building a case rather than winning it. That’s the one reason to choose it: every frame and multiplier you bank is still there when the Detective finally arrives, and a collection paying out all at once beats a string of forgettable line wins. Nobody plays this for the symbols.
Free Spins is where the game finally pays what it’s been promising, because the frames persist and the trail keeps escalating on top of them. The cost is everything either side of it: the base game wipes your board after every bonus, so hours of play can feel like assembling and reassembling the same hand of evidence.
If you like a slot that remembers what you’ve done and pays you for it later, this is a good one. If you want the reels to hand you a win worth the name between bonuses, the rooftop stays quiet. For the builders among you, the safe is worth the climb.
