Unusual Suspects Ultra Link&Win Slot Review
Unusual Suspects Ultra Link&Win is a slot that hides its real game behind a deliberately thin one. The rooftop caper is all charm – a barrel-chested detective with his arms folded, pigeons hunched on the parapet, glass towers and gold trim – but the reels are there to collect symbols more than to pay you. Almost every spin’s value runs in one direction: towards the respin round you either reach or you don’t.
The original Unusual Suspects earned a warm verdict here in 2023 for its Detective framing mechanic; Northern Lights Gaming have kept the cops and rebuilt the chase around locked rows, respins and jackpot symbols. It runs at 96.13% RTP, rising to 96.56% with the boosted bet option, at medium volatility on a 5×3 grid with 25 paylines. Stakes run from 0.20 to 20.00. Fans of the studio’s work can find the same caper energy in Totally Reckless and Panda Bonanza.
Base Game & Features
Wins pay left to right across 25 fixed paylines, and only the highest combination counts on each line. If multiple winning combinations land on a single payline, again only the best one pays. The hit frequency sits at 30.3%, which keeps the reels ticking over without flooding them.
The Wild substitutes for every symbol except the Link&Win and Scatter symbols, and it can appear on any reel. Scatters land on reels two, three and four only, pay in any position, and can’t be substituted by the Wild. Scatter wins are multiplied by the total bet and added to line wins, so a Scatter hit and a line win on the same spin both pay.
Link&Win symbols sit outside the ordinary paytable entirely. They carry their own cash values when they land, they can’t be substituted by the Wild, and collecting enough of them is what opens the feature round. Everything else in the base game exists to move you towards that.
Four things can happen on a given spin, and each has its own route in:
- Line wins – matching symbols left to right across 25 paylines
- High Speed Pursuit – a random reveal after any base game spin
- Free Spins – three Scatters on reels two, three and four
- Ultra Link&Win – six or more Link&Win symbols in any positions
The paytable is a compact one, topped by the case of cash:
- Cash/Money Case – 2x, 5x, 25x for three, four, five of a kind
- Pink Gun/Detonator – 1.2x, 2.5x, 15x
- Detective Badge/Notebook – 1x, 2x, 10.5x
- Handcuffs – 0.8x, 1.5x, 7.5x
- A – 0.5x, 0.8x, 4x
- K – 0.4x, 0.7x, 3x
All values are multiples of the line bet, and the Paytable scales them to whatever stake is currently set. Four premium symbols and two royals is a slim roster, which tells you where this game keeps its real prizes.
Max Mode
Max Mode is the optional boosted bet, switched on or off in the base game. It adds extra Link&Win symbols to the reels, raising the chance of triggering the feature, and it costs an extra bet equal to 2.5 times your current stake.
It doesn’t touch line pays or Link&Win symbol pays – the whole premium buys feature access, nothing else. The RTP rises to 96.56% with it active, so the maths at least pays for the privilege.
High Speed Pursuit
Police cars tear across the reels without warning once a spin settles. When the chase ends, one of three symbols – Link&Win, Wild or Scatter – is revealed on some reel positions, and any resulting wins are paid after the reveal.
It’s a base game-only event, and it can be the difference between a dead spin and a feature trigger. Because the reveal can drop Scatters as well as Link&Win symbols, it feeds either of the two main bonus routes at once.
Unusual Suspects Ultra Link&Win Free Spins & Bonus Features
Free Spins
Three Scatters on reels two, three and four award 10 Free Spins plus a payment of 1x the total bet. The centre three reels merge into a single 3×3 Jumbo Block for the duration, which behaves as nine individual symbols.
That block is doing a lot of the work in this round. Because it acts as nine separate symbols, a single Jumbo landing counts nine times over – and a Link&Win Jumbo Block alone puts a serious dent in the six-symbol trigger for the feature.
Landing a Scatter Jumbo Block awards 10 additional free spins and another 1x total bet. The Max Mode state carries over from the triggering spin and can’t be changed mid-round, and bet and lines stay locked to the triggering spin.
Ultra Link&Win
The headline feature opens with 4 locked rows and 3 unlocked ones, all triggering symbols held in place, and 3 respins on the clock. Every unheld position respins individually on special reels containing only Link&Win symbols and blanks.
Each new symbol that lands is held and resets the respins to 3, and landed symbols can unlock additional rows – including on rows that are still locked. Unlocked symbols don’t count towards unlocking further rows, so progress needs fresh landings.
It’s a round with a genuine two-stage shape. The early respins are about survival – any landing resets the clock and keeps the chase alive – while the endgame is about coverage, with each new symbol worth more as the grid fills and the GRAND comes into view. The feature can also trigger inside Free Spins, where the Jumbo Block’s nine-symbol weight makes it considerably easier to reach.
Every symbol reveals a cash prize or a jackpot, and the ladder runs:
- MINI – pays on each symbol it appears on
- MINOR – pays on each symbol it appears on
- MAJOR – pays on each symbol it appears on
- GRAND – awarded once, for filling all 35 positions, on top of the summed prizes
The round ends when the respins run dry or all 35 symbols are held. The maximum win is capped at 12,500x your stake.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.1/10
Most of a session here is small change on a rooftop, waiting for the case to break. That’s the whole design: the pigeons and the detective are pleasant company, but the reason to sit down at this game is the one round where the grid opens up and the prizes start stacking.
That round is the best thing about it, because it grows instead of just draining. Rows unlock as symbols land, so a good round keeps changing shape right to the end, and the GRAND behind a full grid means the best possible outcome is a distinct event rather than a slightly bigger number.
The strip around it is the problem: line pays are small, and sessions can feel like a long approach to the one moment that matters. Hold-and-win players after medium volatility and a 0.20 minimum will be well served here; anyone who wants the base reels to pay their way will spend the whole session waiting. For the patient type, the rooftop is worth the stakeout.
