Runes to Riches Slot Review
Runes to Riches pays its best symbol exactly what it pays the Jack, and it gets away with it because none of the real money lives in the paytable. Everything worth winning arrives through crystals and climbing wilds instead, under stone pillars lit cyan against a night sky. It’s a game that’s quietly honest about what it is: a long, patient walk through the ruin towards one big combined round.
The game comes from High Limit Studios and runs at 96.01% RTP on high volatility, with a 5×3 grid, 25 fixed paylines and stakes from 0.25 to 50.00. Its nearest stablemates include Boomstick Bill 2, Fivefold the Gold and Reign of Fire. Two features do the work here, and both run through crystals and wilds rather than the runes on the walls.
Base Game & Features
Wins pay left to right across the 25 fixed paylines, starting from the first reel, and only the highest combination counts on each line. The total bet is divided across all 25 lines, and payline wins are paid against that per-line stake rather than the full spin cost. If two winning combinations land on the same line, again only the higher one pays.
The total payout on any spin is the sum of all payline wins plus any Scatter wins. The reels sit in teal Celtic knotwork between two weathered pillars, with a ladder of coloured prize plaques running down the left side of the frame. Those plaques are the fixed Link&Win prizes, and they only pay inside that round.
Wild symbols substitute for everything except Scatters and Link&Win symbols, and they can form their own winning combinations, but they only appear during Free Spins. Scatters are the exception in the other direction: they pay anywhere on the reels and don’t need to sit on a payline. In the base game itself it’s line wins, Scatters and nothing else.
The paytable quotes its prizes in credits at the paytable’s quoted bet:
- Gold Mask: 20.00 for five, 5.00 for four, 2.00 for three
- Green Mask: 20.00 for five, 5.00 for four, 2.00 for three
- Blue Mask: 20.00 for five, 5.00 for four, 2.00 for three
- Purple Face: 20.00 for five, 5.00 for four, 2.00 for three
- A, K, Q and J royals: 20.00 for five, 5.00 for four, 2.00 for three
It’s a flat paytable. Every symbol in the game, top mask down to the Jack, pays the same 2.00 / 5.00 / 20.00 ladder, so there’s no premium symbol to chase in the base game and no reason to care which mask lands. The interesting money lives entirely in the crystals.
Crystal symbols land in the base game carrying small cash values, and they’re the ticket to everything interesting. They appear on all reels. Six or more of them anywhere triggers the Link&Win feature; the prize plaques on the left of the screen are the other thing to watch, and they only pay inside that round.
Runes to Riches Link&Win and Free Spins
Link&Win
Land six to fourteen Link&Win symbols in view and the feature begins. Every triggering symbol locks in place and three respins are awarded. Each new crystal that lands is held too, and the respin count resets to three. The round runs until the respins run dry without a fresh symbol, or until the grid fills completely.
During the round, the held crystals stay fixed while everything else keeps spinning, so each respin is a fresh chance to add to the set. Each crystal carries a cash prize of up to 50x the bet, and four of them are collector symbols that move value around the held set.
The Green Crystal adds its value to two or more held Blue Crystals at random, then turns Blue itself. The Red Crystal does the same to every held Blue Crystal, then turns Blue as well. Neither is fussy about where it lands; they work from any position.
The Gold Crystal is the one worth understanding. It sprinkles its value across the whole held set rather than a chosen few, paying every Blue Crystal at once, but only once per respin. Land another crystal afterwards and the Gold pays out again on the following spin. It never turns Blue, which is why a held Gold late in the round matters more than almost anything else on the board.
The fixed prizes on the ladder pay like this:
- Mega: 5,000x the bet, for filling every position with Link&Win symbols
- Major: 500x the bet
- Minor: 50x the bet
- Maxi: 10x the bet
- Mini: 5x the bet
Landing a Major, Minor, Maxi or Mini symbol during the round triggers that prize immediately. All cash values and fixed prizes are paid together at the end. The Mega needs every position filled, so the last few spaces each get their own three respins to land in.
Free Spins
Three or more Scatters award eleven free spins. This is where the wilds show up, on reels 2 through 5, and the ones to care about carry a multiplier that grows from spin to spin. Those multiplying wilds sit on reels 3, 4 and 5.
Reel 3 wilds climb to 2x, reel 4 to 3x, and reel 5 to 10x. Where several land in one win, their values multiply together, up to a combined 60x. A reel 3 and reel 4 wild in the same win is a 6x line; add reel 5 at its ceiling and it’s the full 60x.
Three or more Scatters during the round add three more spins. Link&Win can also trigger inside Free Spins, which is the one way the two halves of this game meet: a full grid of held crystals while the wild multipliers are still climbing is the scenario everything else is built around. Bets and lines stay the same as the triggering spin, and feature wins are added to base game wins.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.1/10
This is a game of waiting. You spin, crystals drift in carrying small cash values, and the ruin hums quietly until six of them finally show up at once. That’s the whole reason to sit down at it: everything stacks towards a single round where held crystals and climbing wilds collide.
The best thing about Runes to Riches is that its two features can trigger inside each other, so the ceiling genuinely feels reachable rather than decorative. The worst is the dead space around them: with a hit rate of 27.77% and a paytable where every symbol pays identically, the base game gives you nothing to care about between triggers, and the beautiful stonework is working hard to cover for it.
It suits players who enjoy a long build and don’t need the reels to entertain them on the way. Anyone chasing steady small wins or a paytable with tiers to climb up will find it thin. But for the patient type, the walk through this ruin pays off the lights come on.
