Area Link Dragon Ascension Slot Review
A row of gemstone eggs sits nested along the top rail of a gold-framed reel set, while an armoured orange dragon rears up beside the reels, jaws open, forked lightning cracking over the mountain behind it. Area Link Dragon Ascension spends its spectacle generously and its paytable barely at all: this is a slot built almost entirely around one collector round, and the six Dragon upgrades feeding that round do more work than anything the base reels can pay.
It’s an AreaVegas Games build on a 5×3 grid with 20 paylines, 96.47% RTP and high volatility, with stakes from 0.20 to 50.00 per spin. We’ve been here before with Area Link Vegas and Area Link Bank Baron, and the family resemblance is strong.
Base Game & Features
This is a straightforward 20-payline slot. Wins run left to right from the first reel, only the highest combination pays per line, and the payline count is fixed. The initial bet is the total bet divided by the payline cost of 20, and payouts are based on that line stake rather than the total.
Nothing here is unusual with the reel mechanics; the interest sits entirely in what lands on top of them. Dragon symbols are stacked wilds on all reels, substituting for every symbol except the Fireballs, and able to form their own winning combinations. A full stack of them across a payline can pay out on its own merits.
The paytable, per line stake, is thin even by collector-slot standards:
- Chest – 0.5x for three, 1x for four, 5x for five
- Purple/Pink Crystal Cluster, Fire Staff, Blue Amulet, Green Ring – 0.2x for three, 0.5x for four, 2x for five
- A, K, Q, J, 10, 9 – 0.1x for three, 0.2x for four, 1x for five
Five-of-a-kind Chest pays 5x the line stake, and at the top bet of 50.00 that’s 12.50 in credits for the best the reels can do on a single line. The four mid-tier symbols cluster within a fraction of each other, and the royals pay fractions that barely register. If multiple winning combinations land on a single payline, only the highest one counts.
Alongside the standard symbols sit the Fireballs. One or more Fireballs appearing anywhere gives a chance of triggering the collector feature, with each Fireball collecting into the egg of the same colour above the reels.
A row of gemstone-coloured eggs, pink, red, blue, green, orange and violet, sits along the top rail waiting to receive them. That’s the base game’s whole second job: growing the thing that matters.
Area Link Dragon Ascension Bonus Features
The Area Link feature is where this game keeps everything. When it triggers, three respins are awarded and all Fireball symbols lock in place. Landing additional Fireballs resets the respins to three, so a round can keep extending for as long as the Fireballs keep coming. Each Fireball carries a cash prize or a jackpot, all paid at the end of the feature rather than as they land.
The feature runs until the respins are used up or every position is filled. Fill the entire board and the GRAND jackpot is awarded on top of everything already collected. Animation doesn’t influence triggering, so the collecting sequences above the reels are presentation, not probability.
Dragon Ascension
The twist is in the name. When one or more Dragon Fireballs appear, there’s a chance the Dragon Ascension feature fires, awarding an Area Link round with a random set of Dragon Upgrades already attached.
Which Fireballs collected on the triggering spin decides what you get, and a symbol carrying two Fireballs collects into both matching eggs at once. Every egg colour maps to an upgrade. Collect the right Fireballs in the base game and you could enter the feature with a multiplier running, a second array in play, or several upgrades stacking at the same time. The random draw is weighted by what you collected, which gives the egg-collecting a purpose beyond decoration.
The Six Dragon Upgrades
The upgrades are what separate this from a standard hold-and-collect round. Each one changes the feature in a specific way:
- Green Dragon – awards a random multiplier of 2, 3 or 5 each spin; Yellow Fireballs are multiplied once, when they first lock
- Purple or Pink Dragon – awards a second independent feature array; both together means four arrays running at once
- Red Dragon – Red Fireballs instantly collect all new credit prizes and jackpots, then convert into a Yellow Fireball
- Blue Dragon – Blue Fireball values are added to random Yellow Fireballs, possibly multiple times, then convert into a Yellow Fireball
- Orange Dragon – every landed Orange Fireball has its prize boosted by a random amount on every spin
Red and Blue work as temporary visitors: they arrive, do their work, and leave a Yellow Fireball behind in their place, so the board never loses coverage from their passing. Each array plays out its own respins independently, and the feature only ends when every array has either completed its spins or filled its positions.
How the Upgrades Combine
Multiple upgrades can trigger on a single base spin, and the combinations have their own rules. The Green multiplier applies to new Yellow Fireballs across all arrays, and to the Yellow Fireball a Red feature leaves behind. Blue features resolve before any Red features when both are in play.
Red and Blue Fireballs only interact with Fireballs inside their own array when Purple or Pink is active. The Orange boost is premultiplied by the Green multiplier when both are running. It’s a layered system, and the array-stacking potential, four boards running their own respins, is where the big collection totals live. Filling all positions awards the GRAND jackpot on any array that manages it.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.6/10
Spins here are quiet by design. The reels pay small, the stacked wilds pass the time, and everything you’re actually doing is collecting coloured Fireballs into the eggs above the reels, one dragon at a time. That slow build into the collector round is the whole reason to sit down with this game.
The upgrades are the best thing in it, and not just because there are six. They have written rules for how they combine, so a round running a Green multiplier, a Red collect and a doubled array plays out differently each time, rather than resolving into the same collection count every visit.
The weakness is the one the family shares: there’s no win ceiling named anywhere, so you’re collecting blind. It suits patient collector players who enjoy watching a board fill and don’t need a figure to aim at; if the spins themselves have to pay, they don’t here. For the rest, the dragon is guarding a proper hoard, and it’s one you hatch yourself.
