Area Link Wolf Slot Review
A huge pale wolf stands at the left edge of the reels, fur catching the green and violet of an aurora-streaked night sky, with dark pines along the horizon below. It’s a richly painted northern wilderness, and Area Link Wolf doesn’t pay for any of it: the line wins are small, and the game’s real money sits in one respin round behind the Moons.
AreaVegas Games have built the whole slot around that round. It runs on a 5×3 grid with 20 fixed paylines, high volatility and a 96.45% RTP, with stakes from 0.10 to 50.00. It sits in the same stable as Area Link Wolf Unleashed and Area Link Bank Boss. The moon, not the wolf, is the animal to watch here.
Base Game & Features
This is a five reel, three row slot with 20 fixed paylines, paying left to right from the first reel. A payline is a pattern of adjacent positions running across the reels, and every one of the twenty plays on every spin. Where multiple winning combinations land on a single payline, only the highest counts, and the total payout is the sum of all payline wins from the spin.
The total bet is built from an initial bet multiplied by the payline cost of 20, so payline payouts are based on that initial stake rather than the full bet. It’s a small distinction, but it explains why the paytable values below are shown as multiples of the line stake.
The Wolf symbol is wild, stacked on all reels, substituting for everything except the Moon symbols, and it can form its own winning combinations.
Four jackpot plaques sit above the grid, and they’re not decoration: MINI, MINOR and MAJOR prizes ride on individual Moon symbols during the feature, while the GRAND belongs to a full board. More on that below.
The paytable is a northern wildlife cast, and it’s top-heavy in the usual way. At the top bet level, the symbol values as multiples of stake are:
- Bear – 5x for five, 1x for four, 0.5x for three
- Cougar – 2.5x for five, 0.5x for four, 0.25x for three
- Eagle – 2.5x for five, 0.5x for four, 0.25x for three
- Moose – 2x for five, 0.5x for four, 0.25x for three
- Deer – 2x for five, 0.5x for four, 0.25x for three
- A, K, Q, J, 10, 9 – 1x for five, 0.25x for four, 0.1x for three
Five royals pay 1x, so the line wins that carry a session come from the stacked wolves and the big animals. Even the Bear, the best symbol on the grid, pays just 5x for five of a kind, which tells you where the game expects the money to come from.
The hit rate is 28.68%, which on a high volatility build means plenty of spins that pay nothing at all. That’s the shape of the game: the reels exist to deliver Moons, and everything else is small change.
Area Link Wolf Bonus Features
Whenever one or more Moon symbols appear, there’s a chance the Area Link feature triggers. Which of the Moon Upgrades you get is decided before a single respin plays out, by the combination of Moons collected on the triggering spin.
Three respins are awarded and all Moon symbols lock in place. Every additional Moon that lands resets the respins back to three, so a run of early Moon hits can stretch the round considerably. Each Moon carries a cash prize or a MINI, MINOR or MAJOR jackpot, and everything is paid out at the end of the feature.
The round ends one of two ways: the respins run out with positions still open, or every position on the grid fills. Fill all fifteen positions and the GRAND jackpot is awarded on top of everything already collected.
Red Moon Upgrade
A Red Moon collected at the start of the round adds a multiplier to every spin. The multiplier is random each time and is worth 2, 3 or 5.
Each White Moon is multiplied once, when it first locks into place, and keeps that value for the rest of the round. A Moon that locks under a 5x stays a 5x Moon even if later spins roll a 2.
Purple Moon Upgrade
Collect a Purple Moon and the round runs on two grids at once. Each array plays out independently, and each one ends on its own terms, whether that’s filling every position or burning through its respins.
Effectively it’s two collector rounds running side by side, each with its own shot at the GRAND. The boards don’t share prizes, so a hot array can’t rescue a cold one.
Yellow Moon Upgrade
Yellow Moons appear during the round and award an instant collect of all new credit prizes and jackpots, sweeping the board mid-feature rather than waiting for the end. Once it’s done its work, a White Moon is created in its place, so the grid keeps filling even as it pays out.
It’s the only upgrade that puts money in the balance while the respins are still running. Everything else waits for the round to finish.
Multiple Moon Upgrades
More than one upgrade can arrive on a single triggering spin, and the round is then played with every upgrade that came with it. Each pairing has its own written rule:
- Red + Purple – the random multiplier applies to all new White Moons on both arrays
- Red + Yellow – the multiplier applies to the White Moon created after the Yellow Moon collects
- Yellow + Purple – the Yellow Moon only collects values within its own array
It’s these pairings that give the round its depth. A doubled array running a multiplier behaves the way the rules say it will, round after round, and no two triggered features play out quite the same way.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.7/10
This is a slow burn under a fast sky. The aurora glows, the wolf watches, and the reels mostly tick over on small change while you wait for a Moon to stick. That wait is the reason anybody picks it: when the respin round finally arrives carrying two or three upgrades at once, it plays like nothing else on the shelf.
The upgrade pairings are the best thing here, because every collision has a written rule and you can learn them. The worst thing is that the base game rarely pays its own way.
Patient players who enjoy watching a board fill, and who like knowing a mechanic inside out, will get plenty from it. If the spins themselves need to pay, this northern night will feel long. For the collectors, the moon over this wilderness is worth sitting under.
